12-Year-Old Riding New Scooter Dies After Being Struck By Car December 26, 2014
A 12-year-old boy was killed Friday while riding an electric scooter he got a day earlier for Christmas.
Roman Martinez pulled out of his driveway directly into the path of an oncoming car, KTLA-TV reported.
"He got everything he wanted," his younger sister Rylie Martinez told the station. "It was his happiest Christmas."
The crash occurred just before noon just north of Upland, a small city east of Los Angeles. The boy's father said his son was wearing a helmet. He was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No problem - no gun involved.
Sad .
Too bad an adult was not watching him. I’m sure that the kid was so excited over his first ride and forgot about the rules.
Dear Lord, please comfort this family.
Very sad, but it reminds me of the proverbial giving your son a bb gun for Christmas.
Oh man - a moment of carelessness is all it takes sometimes.
What’s a 12-year old kid doing, driving a scooter in traffic?
So sad.
And if the lady driving the Honda had a couple of drinks prior (which doesn’t appear to be the case), she’d be looking at being a FELON for life, and maybe a decade in jail...even if the accident occurred under IDENTICAL circumstances.
Can you really blame people that have had a few drinks from taking off after something like this?
These are the saddest stories.
Sounds like ‘whiskey throttle’. Not that he had been drinking, when an inexperienced rider finds himself going too fast, he does the exact opposite of what he should do.
Tragic.
We had a member of our parish die, crossing the street after Christmas Eve Mass. The poor soul that struck and killed her will have to live with that the rest of his life.
I can visualize this, but really don’t want to.
Very sad. My boy is almost 12. Just a little kid in 5th grade.
Tragic... prayers for him and his family.
Nor do I.
Want to bet the helmet was one of those goofy bicycle things?
My wife and I always felt it was the easy way out to say yes to children. It’s much harder to say no!
Yes.
At 12 I had my first motorcycle or (motor scooter when that meant a smaller motorcycle) for my city transportation, and at age 14 had my first car, that was in Houston.
I remember once noticing a kid rushing down an inclined driveway leading into the street in front of me. So I slowed down. He was watching me and my car the whole way. As I approached he came out of the driveway and almost slammed into my car, he had to swerve and brake hard to avoid hitting my driver side door, I was almost at a complete stop at this point. I rolled down my window and the first words out of my mouth were an involuntary inquiry about his sanity. He rode off, shaken, but uninjured, otherwise.
Looking back, I think his intention was to swoop in behind me and follow in my slipstream to hit 40 MPH or so. Bad judgment on his part. imho.
