Indiana man found dead after attacked by pet pit bull on Christmas Day

An Indiana man was mauled to death by his pet pit bull on Christmas Day, Portage police say.

Edward L. Cahill, 40, was discovered on the living room floor by his girlfriend when she returned from visiting relatives for the holiday. Cahill was unresponsive, NBC Chicago reports.

Authorities were called to a home in the 5500 block of Tulip Avenue at about 8:14 p.m. Cahill was found dead on the floor covered in blood and with multiple lacerations on his face and arms, the Portage police report. A county coroner pronounced Cahill dead at the scene and determined his cause of death was from a dog mauling.

According to Fox Chicago, Cahill's pet pit bull, "Fat Boy," was at fault. Police say the dog was aggressively barking, growling and lunging at officers. A stun gun and an animal control pole was used to get "Fat Boy" under control.

NBC Chicago says the couple raised their dogs since they were puppies, however "Fat Boy" has consistently been aggressive. The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend's son in the past, the police report adds.

I suspect those “missing pet” pit bulls have been drugged/poisoned and disposed of. I don’t agree with poisoning dogs but I’ve read that people are afraid for their families, particularly children, when pits are allowed to dominate the neighborhood (frequently off leash and agressive or easily able to escape their enclosures). People know what these dogs are capable of and cite it as a constant source of stress when neighbors allow the dogs to escape repeatedly. I’ve read that people kill these dogs and dispose of the body to avoid prosecution.
Pits are also over represented at animal shelters because they escape their kennel or fenced yard and go hunting etc.
Pits that are abandoned by their owners for aggression form dog packs and are often cited in reports of attacks on pets and people. For these reasons, I don’t think it’s a kindness to try to maintain these animals as pets; they are a survival threat to humans and pets and as such are killed, abandoned, or given up at shelters at higher numbers than other dogs.
I believe that breeding pits or pit crosses should be banned and those current pet pits which escape their enclosures should not be returned to owners. Require current pit owners to register their pits as wild animals with special enclosures. Allow the current pit “pet” population to “age out” prosecuting owners for criminal behavior when their aggressive pit attacks/mauls. Human deaths would decrease and fewer pit bulls would show up on facebook as “missing.”

There’s too many abused dogs and abusive owners out there. This appears to have been one of them.

I’ve seen carefully trained pit bulls be sweet as ever (huggable, teasable) with their owners, but gnarly to most every one else who comes in contact with their owners!

You are wrong.

The majority of them are stolen for resale or fighting, whether as bait or combatants.

The rest of your hysterical, error infested screed is beneath reply.

I forgot you deem information you don’t like as “hysterical” and a “screed.” But, BSL are steadily being implemented so it doesn’t matter.

The dog was probably an aspiring rapper trying to turn his life around.

Sounds like he played a little to rough with the dog while on the floor.
Much to rough with a mean dog to begin with.

Yes, we had a very nice Christmas, hope you did, too. My mother is coming to visit today; not sure what we’ll do, since it’s supposed to pour rain all day.

I think they’ll strike a balance between arresting dog owners (good to see that increasing) and BSL and work out on a locale basis how best to reduce the costs of cleaning up after the damage pit bulls cause (medical, law enforcement etc.). All across the world, countries are implementing BSL because they can’t carry the costs of the carnage.

Screaming does nothing to increase your credibility.

You discount the “fake testimonies” of experts but worship your chosen, apparently cherished fake “facts”.

You also seem to be coming a tad unhinged.

Fascinating.

Tell me, does it aggrieve you that I do not even own a bully breed?

Carnage?

Hyperbole much?

The fact is that until the owners and breeders who pervert the natures of the beast are brutally punished, nothing will change.

Eventually, the hood rats will move on to another breed and then we’ll be demonizing them.

A friend of mine had a black lab that, like all black labs, loved everybody. In his old age, be became vicious, and had to be put down. The vet said he probably had the dog version of dementia. Unlike some morons on this thread, I do not claim all dogs of any breed should be shot.
