Trestman was hired in a winding interview process that included more than 12 candidates. The other finalist for the opening was Bruce Arians, who just completed a 10-6 season with the Arizona Cardinals.
Trestman said Sunday he planned to return, but after a 6-10 finish and drama-filled season, his fate was determined several weeks ago. The Bears lost five straight games to end the season and eight of their final 10.
Chicago was 8-8 in 2013.
Billed as a quarterback whisperer, Trestman had strong results as a rookie coach. The Bears finished second in the NFL in scoring to the Denver Broncos in 2013, but the decline was dramatic in 2014. Chicago was 21st in passing and 23rd in scoring.
Emery's biggest decisions did not pan out. He invested $126 million in quarterback Jay Cutler prior to the 2014 season on a seven-year deal that made Cutler the NFL's highest-paid player in 2014 at $22.5 million.

Why would anyone think this guy (Cutler) “has it”? He is incredibly erratic and turnover prone.
He's fooled two teams so far, I'm sure there is another one out there saying to itself "If he was only in the right offensive scheme then he'd be terrific" and would pick him up if cut.
I know Jim Harbaugh has been reported to have accepted the job at the University of Michigan, but I would think the Bears job would be a perfect fit for him. Harbaugh was a QB for the Bears under Mike Ditka and he would bring the toughness the team was lacking under Trestman. I think he’s an NFL guy not a college coach anymore. Could this firing of Trestman be timed to get Harbaugh to listen to a job offer from the Bears? I hope so.
AS a Green Bay Packer fan I take great delight in the Bears distress.
Also, he could light a fire under that talented but gutless wonder Jay Cutler.
Kaepernick/RG III and other “run-option” QBs are NFL coach killers because the owners want players who have drawing power...not so much “wins”
Run-option QBs (ROQB) can either move the NFL forward or destroy the local “franchise”.
ROQB would be drafted with the understanding that they have a !MAX! NFL career of 5 years and should be paid accordingly (reduced contract value) owing to the evidence that other players (RBs and WRs) contribute an equal amount.
ROQB may be the future of the NFL but...ROQB are short-term capital expenditures.
Quite frankly, it isn’t Jay Cutler. The Defense was terrible most of the season, and the offensive line play was lacking as well.
The Bears couldn’t sack or pressure with the defensive line they had.
If they dump Cutler today, who would they start, Clausen? They have no options at QB except to do one of three things: Trade Cutler for whatever and play someone just as bad, or draft a rookie and get pretty much the same thing, or 3rd- play him while looking for more QB help and draft help where they need it most- the defense. They need a Safety, a Middle Linebacker, AND a stellar Defensive end. Until they do, dumping Cutler and getting nothing makes no sense at all.
Maybe, they trade Cutler for multiple draft picks. If they can get at least 3 high or midlevel picks- maybe. Other than that, it wouldn’t help IMHO.

You’re correct. Take Drew Breese for example. An outstanding QB, but without the needed protection he becomes erratic and prone to making mistakes. Couple that with a defense incapable of containing the opposition’s offense and more games will be lost then won as evidenced by the Saint’s 7-9 season.
Yesterday’s SuckBowl(battle to not be the NFC North Division worst) was not televised in most areas of the country, even though there was more at stake with more players and coaches fighting to keep their jobs on both teams, than most of the games that were fighting to get a playoff spot or a home field advantage.
Chicago, check. SF, check. NY Jets, check.

Don’t forget Cam Newton, the ROQB par excellance. I predict he will play as long as he wants. Wilson too. The others run because they are not very good at throwing.
I understand...but the owners/coaches should ^begin^ with the assumption that they will replace their ROQB every 5 years provided they continue to win under a ROQB offense. (lowered salary expectations?)
Kaepernick and Wilson ^will^ suffer a time-off injury within their 5 year tenure K, as oldest, has another 2 years, right?). Both SF and The Hags shoould be looking at drafting ROQB in the mid-draft-rounds next year. The ‘Skins will either change their offense or look to draft another ROQB. For my money, RGIII will stay in DC...for now.
Think about what this strategy means to the salary cap situation...an owners dream, yes?
Funny thing is, the NFL is a capitalist enterprise for the owners but the players expect a socialist/marxist form of recompense. I think the capitalists will win.
Cam is “slipping the odds” by staying around but, when he gets hurt, is there a viable ROQB to step in behind him?
That is what the strateegerists in the NFL are working on...having 3 equivalent ROQBs in the stable (and the owners pay them all the same rate...)
Even the NFL will catch up to capitalism.
