Plastic Today, Glass Tomorrow{Barf/Stoopid: Glass Straws Enviromentalism}
TheInertia ^ | Jan 4, 2015 | Michael Debes

The negative impact plastic is having on our oceans has been widely documented. Billions of pounds of plastic can be found on our beaches and in the oceans and 80 percent of the plastic pollution enters the ocean from the land. In the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments—like grocery bags, straws and bottles—are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day.

For the surfing community, and the world, the war on plastic is an ongoing battle, and it’s one that we’re losing. We are drowning in plastic and sustainable efforts need to be implemented and supported so that future generations can learn to love and respect the ocean and all its inhabitants.

On my recent trip to Bali I was wowed by the waves, the crystal blue water, and radiant coral. But I crushed by the pollution that lined the beaches. After an epic session at Shipwrecks on Nusa Lembongan, I stumbled into a café and ordered a mango smoothie that was served with a glass straw. I admired the straw, considering it nothing more than a sweet café accessory to accompany the sweet refreshing beverage. After devouring my breakfast, and walked to the counter to pay and ask the waitress about the straw. I soon learned that it wasn’t just a flashy accessory, it was a powerful movement.

...

We can repair the past by remodeling for the future. By simply suggesting to your local café or favorite restaurant to introduce glass straws, your making a huge difference in the fight against plastic.

Thanks for the correction. I knew the spoon issue was drug-related.

BS.

I goggled that line and it appears to be another "factoid" that the left likes to use, w/o any source to justify it, just like the "97% of scientists agree that man is causing global warming".

Corn-based plastics are biodegradable but are more expensive than petroleum based plastics.

the study showed that 89% of the plastic was thrown out as litter by progressive sitizens that have no appreciation at all for the sewer in which they exist

If all straws were made of glass I’d have chipped my teeth/cut my lip or put my eye out by now.

I remember when straws were made of paper, sacks also. Then came the movement to save the trees...

Glass.

Straws.

Actually, glass straws SHOULD be a law.

But only for liberals.

Then I can smash the head of every glass-straw user I see, into the table.

They will have a 10% chance of surviving the glass shard removal surgery.

Back when the environmental movement began they got lots of people to separate glass, colored from clear, newspapers and plastic.

Then one day someone wondered where all that went so they followed the collection men....to the local trash dump where it was all dumped and covered.

But everyone felt SO GOOD about caring for the earth!

“Billions of pounds of plastic can be found on our beaches and in the oceans”

Sounds like a resource to exploit- if we can collect it and recycle it, imagine how much oil we could save!

A series of floating Eco-cities seining plastic from the oceans, making it into useful polymer again, inhabited by Eco-conscious activists (who would be out of our hair for a while).

There were no plastic grocery bags till the tree hugging environmentalist demanded plastic ones to save the forest.

The renewable, biodegradable paper grocery bag was one of the 1st victims of liberal political correctness.

The building where I worked had separate dumpsters for paper, plastic and trash. One day when I happened to be on the loading dock I saw the trash truck go from dumpster to dumpster.

Not quite. Nobody “cooks heroin” in a little plastic spoon.
They WERE however perfect for a snort of coke...

We have mills closing up here in Maine...PAPER cups with a wax lining....to much common sense and not enough lobbyists stroking the jerk offs /criminals in D.C. Both items in the paper cup are biodegradable and light weight and can be made here ...I personally re-use the DD cups from iced coffees until they break....people /the electorate are foolish and lazy with no concept of the length of time it takes for plastic (oil) to breakdown...and none of the fragments are beneficial to plant growth....so much for being educated....Styrofoam is another culprit...paper to-go boxes are the way...the list is endless

Paper straws work just fine with milkshakes made from scratch.

Not to mention that the feeling of a glass straw against your teeth would be very off-putting.

They make some really great plastic imitations of glass and china now; and sometimes when I’m not sure if an item is glass or china, or plastic, the only way I can tell is to touch it with my teeth.

My teeth never lie; but it’s an unpleasant feeling. Glass straws would never sell for long.
