[Six+ years old story] Europe plunged into energy crisis as Russia cuts off gas supply via Ukraine
Daily Mail ^ | circa 2009 or before | Robert Lea

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.

Lithuania Offers Example of How to Break Russia’s Grip on Energy.

Check out the photo of the Lugan patriots cheering the ship into the harbor (I can't post it here).

And I was just reminded of one of our dearly departed Bolshevik FReepers (he got the banhammer), wetphoenix. He was astounded when I suggested that Russian engages in energy blackmail. Give him a wave, guys, and raise a glass of vodka . . . he'll be posting under another name soon, if he isn't already.

Isn’t there a Kennedy somewhere that can help Europe with their energy problems?

It's 48 degrees Fahrenheit today and 38 degrees Fahrenheit tonight. Any cutoff of Russian supplies should be one more reason not to finance a rogue madman.

The first thing I thought of was somebody’s going to step up their game in Syria. Going to keep an eye on that.

That’s shorts and tee shirts weather.

Having a warm snap here, so it’s been above freezing, but other week was -49 celcius.

This is a good reason to have a wood burning stove. I know most in Bosnia do, the Serbs are smart.

Geez, I can mail you a shirt, you should have one. heh.

Ya, most people don’t realize it’s fairly mild in a lot of European countries. It’s when you get up in the mountains that it gets quite chilly.

Europe should be proud of high gas prices. High prices are a blessing in disguise as they are helping lower their carbon footprint. /sarc

#12 - Agreed - I’ll read some more and try to understand, but Russia is choking on the crushing blow to oil prices right now, why cut off another source of revenue unless there is an issue with ROI or they are cutting off diplomatic relations altogether?

He was going to sell gas to Europe AND China. The China stream comes on line in three years. Can you see the business problem with this scenario?

Putin chose to stop importing food from Europe because it objected to his undeclared war with proxies against a neighbor that Putinstan is at peace with. So he’s using food as a weapon, which backfired.

“This happens just as the UK is having it’s coldest night in a century...”

That’s not what the article said. It said that “The UK is suffering one of its coldest nights this century with temperatures plunging to as low as -10C.” “This century” means since January 1, 2001. So what the article states is that the UK is experiencing “one of its coldest nights” (what, 10th coldest?) *in the past 14 years*. So I don’t think that it’s anywhere close to the coldest night in the UK in the past 100 years.

Moreover, if the article is correct in that “temperatures plung[ed] to as low as -10C,” then it couldn’t possibly be one of the coldest nights in recent British memory. Ten below is pretty darned cold when we’re talking degrees Fahrenheit, but -10 Celsius is an unimpressive 14 degrees *above* 0 Fahrenheit (to convert degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9, divide by 5, and then add 32). I’ve never been in the UK during winter, but I know that it’s pretty far north and that it can’t be unheard of for it to get colder than 14 degrees during winter nights.

So I think that the Daily Mail is engaging in a bit of hyperbole regarding the extent of the cold spell facing the UK right now, which is consistent with the alarmist tone of the article. But I hope that Europeans react by extracting more natural gas to bridge the gap in the short run and by permitting fracking so as to end Russia’s extortion in the long run.

Culture matters. Russia has no historical liberty movement, nor do they have the absolute nuclear family, nor a common law heritage based on God-given rights. America is very unique in world history.

OP is just trying to stir the pot here. Nobody else is reporting this as a major story. He’s deliberatly confusing two issues.

Russia needs other countries to pay for their pipelines because they are broke. So the Chicoms got a great deal and now Russia wants the EU to pay for a NEW pipe through Turkey. That’s what’s going on here. The current contracts expire in 2020 I believe.

It’s really funny that Putinists think a gas station like Russia is going to dictate to the EU. Basically the entire Russian economy will collapse and be state owned by the end of the year if banking sanctions are not lifted. Russia isn’t doing the dictating now. No way they are going to cause big problems for the EU right before sanctions are being reviewed.

Well, that should make the price of gas go up in Europe... which according to all the economists recently should lead to a roaring economy!
