For more than a decade, Tom Brady has established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, one of the sport’s most popular and respected players. On Wednesday, Brady may have jeopardized his credibility for good.

Like Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Brady denied having anything to do with footballs being deflated in the AFC Championship Game and denied knowing it had occurred until the next day, but to the quarterback’s former peers, the NFL’s golden boy lost some of the luster he had earned in his 15-year career.

“I did not believe what Tom had to say,” former quarterback and ESPN analyst Mark Brunell said.

I’ve read from various sources that the Colts’ footballs WERE checked and within range, whereas the Patriots were not (at half time).

Also, checking the pressure was supposedly scheduled for halftime. Reading between the lines, I’d say the Ravens complaint from the week before of not having properly inflated KICKING balls, was the reason. Whether it was info passed directly from the Ravens or through the Colts coaching staff, who knows. The playing balls were in fact found to be below specs. In one report, there was info that a new guage was used to do the pressure check at half time. (The gauges that the refs use in the pregame check are provided by the home team.)

I seriously doubt anyone would have found out about the deflated balls if a reporter had not leaked it. The NFL is not showing they plan on getting to the bottom of what happened. As of yesterday, they had yet to interview Brady.

I have no idea who ordered the balls deflated, and frankly don’t care, but the claim a professional QB with a long career in the NFL didn’t notice the balls were under inflated by 20% all game? Yea, doesn’t pass the smell test.

Something puzzling about your reasoning that a pro QB wouldn't notice an under inflated ball. Why didn't the officials, at least two of whom handle the ball after every play, notice any difference? And they handle the ball twice as much as any quarterback during a game. And they handled each side's footballs, without gloves, the entire game with some being under inflated and others properly inflated but never did anything about it.

You made it an issue by your statement: "Pressure drops from 13.5 to 11.9 in minutes".

The connection between temperature and pressure is well understood.

If the experiment was, as I suspect, an effort to demonstrate that the environmental conditions at game time were sufficient to explain the NFL's observation that the Patriots' balls were underinflated, the experiment was essentially meaningless.

We know the weather conditions, so we know the end point temperature, but we really don't know the initial temperature of the balls when their pressures were tested prior to the game.

Hopefully, the NFL has that information.

So you dismiss his points out of hand? No matter what you think personally of him, at least admit Francesca's points are at least arguable. I think he has successfully dismissed the irrelevancy of the score -- that the Patriots won, would have won, deserve to have won -- from the fact their "star" quarterback clearly lied and cheated which is -- or at least should be -- the sole purpose of the NFL "investigation".

I’ve read various sources that say the Colts footballs were checked, but the original sources aren’t sure when that refers to. Along the line, there was an assumption that they meant half-time, but that’s one of the things we don’t know.

Could be, but at no time are the teams allowed to have the kicking balls unsupervised, and both teams use the same ones. Kicking balls are shipped directly to the Referees, and the kickers are allowed 45 minutes of directly supervised working of the ball in the presence of the referee. New balls are issued every game.

Additionally, the fluctuation in temperature also impacts your tire's psi. The rule of thumb is for every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in ambient temperature, your tire's inflation pressure will change by about 1 psi (up with higher temperatures and down with lower). If anyone should be punished it should be the NFL for calling their referees professionals if they can't tell a ball is inflated properly or not.

I meant that the current situation has strong benefits at least for now. The traffic on NFL-related things is through the roof. If it is determined that there was this level of energy expended on a relatively ordinary event that simply hadn’t been checked before in like conditions...there’d be an exhaustion, and likely dropped viewership.

None of which to say that this would have been the way they’d want to go...but since it’s here, and wasn’t able to be resolved straight off, there’s now an incentive to let it keep rolling for another week.

Also I’m not so sure that the kicking balls are in the ref’s hands after the game starts. Yes, they are new balls, but are you sure the home team ball attendants aren’t in charge of them once the game begins? I think they may be.

I'd isolate each ball that was underinflated and the same number of "normal" footballs.

First thing I would do would be to cut one under and one normal one open.

I think something else is going on....but I don't know what.
