I believe it was MSU that was negotiating to pick him up. He went from future NFL millionaire to future prison inmate in under 2 seconds.

I haven’t heard the expression “Mick” used for Irish in a long time. Not being Irish myself, I wouldn’t use it unless I knew somebody really well. Many Irish people who I’ve known have a good sense of humor about it, and don’t see that as an insult.
They make great storytellers. Some describe it as ‘Blarney’.

Jersey, so many wanna be Irish and Italian folks, but truth is, most are 3rd generation, at best, Mick or Italian, but don’t tell them.

I honestly do not believe anoyone who might have drop of Irish in their DNA will be offended to be called a Mick.

It’s a badge of honor, to most, I think, from my life expierences.

Big cities are a blight on humanity, Tom Jefferson was right.

If the teacher had defended himself, maybe he would’ve ended up in serious legal trouble. Teachers have told me they’re not allowed to touch the students, not even to break up a fight between students.

I like how the teacher dealt with the thuggery at his one room schoolhouse in “Farmer Boy” circa 1885: After several days on his new job enduring bad behavior from several toughs who boasted about thrashing teacher, he is given a very nice whip by one of the students fathers, and he whips some boys in Bill Ritchie’s gang from the Hardscrabble Settlement who had beaten up his predecessors, causing one to have even died later from his injuries.

A friend that retired from an urban NJ elementary school described how a co-worker, after the principal wouldn’t remove a violent student from her class, ended up getting hit by the young thug while separating him from another student. She took a year off on disability; that district paid a steep price for inaction (though they didn’t care - the suburbs paid it anyway).

Paterson NJ was recently in the news because they had maybe 20 students ready for college - and it is a big urban district.

That was then.

This is now.

We watch an animal throwing an older man around, and other kids just sit there and laugh.

What a wonderful, diverse society we’ve become. Ain’t it great?

One of my relatives was punched and knocked down by a student in her class at a high school around 40 years ago. Teaching can be a dangerous profession.

My only experience with Paterson was to walk through the campus at the university there when one of my sons was looking at colleges.

It wasn’t so bad before (when dangerous kids would be quarantined in the classroom by the boiler room with an able-bodied male teacher to pass the time); what has happened now is that many urban parents (understandably) resist having their children treated in this manner (basically written off) and insist their children are kept in mainstream classes. This is why the racial issues in school disciplining is coming to head now; whereas before the needs (education) of the many outweighed the needs of the few (bad apples), now those few can prevent the many from receiving any education at all (unless they are removed from the classroom altogether).

I went to a rough high school, but my own children have been homeschooled. So, to know anything about the public school system today, I have only news stories and information from teachers and other parents to rely on. Otherwise, I really have no experience dealing directly with today’s school system (thank goodness).
