Suntory until the late 1980's was known for cheap, Japanese-made whiskey aimed primarily for Japanese drinkers. But their decision to go for the highest quality whiskeys resulted in the single malt Yamazaki and blended Hibiki whiskeys, considered by many as among the very best in the world, period.

That is a wild piece of information most drinkers don’t know. Japan produces some of the finest drinks out there.

These four companies are distributors. At least with Brown-Forman they dont own the distilleries. I'm pretty sure that Diageo and Pernod Ricard own quite a number of distilleries. Suntory surprises me, I didn't know they were that large an operation.

Friend of mine picked up some Yamazaki because Japanese whiskey just sounds funny and the bottle was cheap enough for the joke. Then we opened it. Joke was on us, that’s good stuff.

George Dickel is also a Diageo product, though too small I guess to make it onto the “American” lineup there

One of the Yamazaki whiskies took home the top honors in 2014. The stuff really flies off the shelves here in north Texas, too.

No Black Velvet, either.
I figured I'd personally guarantee that brand a spot on the list. ;0)

I saw a Japanese entry on the Best Of list a few months ago and could not find it to save my soul. Seems word has been out.
