How would you survive a long-term disaster situation? I am talking about the worst case scenario gangs of marauders, hungry people fleeing the cities, and/or soldiers storming through neighborhoods with no electricity, no grocery stores, no water, and no heat.
The lead recommendation in this scenario is to bug out to a rural area. Ideally, you would own a self-sustaining property away from the population masses and get there before the chaos begins. Many people will attempt this approach. People from the urban areas will spread out toward the suburbs and ultimately to the rural areas. Those who are fleeing violence in the cities and those that have cabins or strategic property will all be on the same highways at the same time.
You can imagine the traffic jam. Fighting might break out. Cars might be abandoned and permanent roadblocks created. You dont want to be in that mix.

There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger. Underestimation can be fatal.
How so?
And old post but a lot of firsthand experience and advice:
A Survival Q & A: Living Through SHTF In The Middle Of A War Zone
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2798007/posts
I live in a small town in the Southwest and have a cousin with a ranch several miles away in the boondocks. The whole extended family plans to converge on that ranch in the event of a situation where armed patrols will be required and survival will be the priority. My enclosed trailer has my music gear in it but I won’t take long to unload that and load it with food, water, firearms, ammo, and bivouac stuff.
There will not be “a million people” headed to a cabin in the woods/mountains. Within 12 hours of the ‘ball dropping’ the Fed’s procedures are to have the NG and other Military choke off all major roads leading out of the large Pop. centers to maintain any semblance of sheeple control. (Look it up, it is not now, or has never been, a secret). No water....3-5 days later the party is over. I’ll stay right where I am at. I realize not everyone can be already ‘up and out’ into the mountains like myself and many others but it could be a goal. When the time comes, if it does, at least go down swingin’ Org. Sounds like you have a good plan also and will do that. That is all anybody can hope for. stay safe!
How long before they desert their posts to go take care of their own families?
I live in Houston and when they evacuated Houston for the last hurricane, there was a solid line of cars to Austin (158 miles). It took 25 hours for my parents to make it to Austin. If everyone in Houston had left, they would have never made it. Leaving is not an option. There will be curfews to deal with as well.
I've often wondered... If the major arteries, like US 290 or I-10, are so clogged with traffic, couldn't you make better time over the county roads? Say, by exiting on 249 up thru Tomball, then proceeding to Austin on US 79 -- which shouldn't be at all congested.
A very good point ‘Red, granted and one I believe will occur...to a point. If Military men stationed, say on the West Coast, with their families back home located on say the East Coast, with no travel those men are not going anywhere. They will be stuck....but stuck with the food and water that the Military has prepped for, the 2 very things most of the unprepared will kill for after short order. (Especially water...3 days without, for most, is said to be the red zone). Local police, I agree 100% with you, that they would go to their families asap. I pray it never comes to the entire scenario but who knows huh?
Failure of Civility.

Never heard any soldier say “I carried to many rounds of ammo into the fire-fight”>
So how is that over estimation?

Most are jobs that would require maybe thirty minutes of training.
Which is why I sometime wonder at the people who want only those who have "skills" in their group.
Lots of willing hands attached to warm bodies is going to be the biggest need so if you have a choice between lazy sullen skilled and hardworking willing unskilled take the unskilled.
They can be taught what is necessary.

Have you tried these? And does it come with two radios? I’m looking into the old CB radios. May be able to find one at a pawn shop.
Oh, priced individually unless you buy the five pack which is a screaming deal.
