One year later, has Michael Sam been frozen out of the NFL? (Barf Alert)

It was a year ago - the Sunday after Super Bowl XLVIII at 8pmET - that Michael Sam turned speculation into reality: One of college football's best players, and a top NFL prospect, was gay.

In the coming months he was showered with praise. Eric Dickerson would offer him congratulations. Michael Irvin would call him his friend. Robert Quinn welcomed him to the Rams. Even the President of the United States, Barack Obama himself, would laud him.

I'll say this slowly as this dumb jackass in the media doesn't understand football. Pros and college are different. That's how Heisman winners often bust. Andre Ware. Tim Tebow. Troy Smith. Matt Leinart.

NFL teams don't like distractions, especially those who are marginal prospects. If you can play, you can play. If you are a long term project or a sometimes functional backup, you better not be a distraction. If you are a media circus without getting 10 sacks a season, it's not happening.

Michael Sam is a circus because of a homo obsessed media. He wasn't good enough to play. Johnny Football is a circus and will be out of a job soon as he can't get the job done. I'll get yelled at for saying this, but Tim Tebow was a media circus and didn't get the job done.

All he did was win 7 out of 8 games and go to the playoffs. And many of his wins were hard fought at the end. I like these Tebow wasn’t any good types. God only knows how he would have matured. Sure wish Denver had him now, going into next year.

I have heard that only about 3 to 5% of top college players ever make it to the NFL.

Which means 95% never get there. The competition to play in the NFL is fierce.

There are many reasons besides homosexuality for this guy to not be playing in the NFL. As another noted here, there have been Heisman Trophy winners who never played a down in the NFL.

Face it, that a good solid college player has only an outside chance of making the pros. Even superstar college players can’t take it for granted that they will make it.

The MSM has completely distorted this whole issue of being drafted and playing pro football. They created the impression that having been drafted that Sam would be on the team. They just ignore that guys are cut in training camp all the time.

Exactly!!!! Tim Tewbow got saved the Broncos from a losing season and got them two rounds deep in the playoffs.

Where is the outrage? Oh, that’s right, Tim Tewbow is a great role model and outspoken about his faith.

Wouldn’t want that kind in the NFL./sarc

They were 1-4 when he took over. He won 7 of his next 8 starts, and a playoff game. And did everything wrong supposedly. All he knew how to do was win.

His talents haven’t miraculously improved over the past year so I’d say if he’s been “frozen out” then it’s due to that.

As a true lifelong Bronco fan, let me say that Elway and company made the correct decision in cutting Tebow—a decision that has proven to have been correct at Tebows every subsequent stop in the NFL.

funny how we never saw these articles about Tim Tebow who, despite all his problems at QB, brought the Broncos to the playoffs as a rookie...articles asking if his Christian beliefs have blacklisted him from the league..

All he did was NOT complete passes. Really, the Tebow crowd needs to get over it. 3 teams, 4 coaches, 4 training camps, he got more chances than 90% of the players who wash out. He didn’t make it.

Wasn't the guy that just won the Super Bowl an un drafted walk on who worked his way onto the roster and a starting DB position.

Whats to keep Sam's from walking on to any NFL team and winning a spot on their team.

Other than the fact that Sams is a drama queen diva who wants to mau mau the NFL to giving him a starting slot because he is queer sudden gay political pressure.

Those sources foretold the 2014 season for Sam, who fell to the seventh round of the NFL Draft and was cut by two teams.

I suggest that his horrible performance at the combine did more to drop is stock in the draft than his sexual orientation did.

Lack of ability to play his position at the pro level.

Sam was the Defensive Player of the Year for the SEC because the other tackle required DOUBLE TEAM BLOCKING. Sam benefited from that.

Oh we saw these articles when it was Tebow. And they were just as pathetically stupid and wrong then as the Sam articles. Both players are out of the game for the same reason: not good enough. Certain people on both sides of the political spectrum want to make the situations something they are not, and those parties are unintentionally hilarious.

Yet amidst the celebration, the writing on Sam’s 2014 NFL wall started three hours after his big announcement a year ago. Days earlier CBS Sports had ranked Sam their No. 90 pre-Draft prospect, projected to be selected in the third round. Simply based on the fact that Sam came out as gay - based on nothing but his sexual orientation - CBS Sports dropped him to pick No. 160 - Mid-fifth round.

In the eyes of CBS Sports, being gay in the NFL cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars and put your draft stock in jeopardy. They weren’t the only ones.”

what a complete joke and spin of the facts...

1) Sam was awful at the Senior Bowl in 2014 and when asked to play linebacker, the position he projected to in the NFL, looked lost and out of place....conversely Marcus Smith of Louisville looked terrific and ended up in the first round...

2) Sam was even worse at the combine, unable to break 4.9 seconds in the forty at 260 lbs....his other marks (bench, jumps, shuttles) were equally as bad....
