It was (-9) here the other day, and (-11) in day or so. Of course, the furnace had to die last night... Waiting for the doofus to fix it

NM is desert southwest, but much of it is high mountains

I was in Phoenix last week visiting my son, and he took me up to Sedona: only 100 miles to the north, but the elevation change is from 1000 ft. in PHX to nearly 5000, and both the temperature and oxygen level change were easily palpable.

Lowest temps I ever experienced in my life were in NM. -18F that time. I never saw that kind of cold, even in Alaska. Granted, I was in Alaska during the summer... but still. -18 is plenty cold enough as far south as NM. At 7000 ft ASL.

We hit pretty darn low temps (below zero, but not teens - high single digits) with wind chill factors a few years ago. The coldest I've ever been was in February in Gunnison, CO. 22 below zero without wind chill. Once I got my car started, I'd have to let it warm up for several minutes before the transmission would even recognize what the letters other than P or N meant.

This winter alone, we've seen single digits and low teens overnight for several days.

We hit high sixties and low seventies a little over a week ago, and were in the teens and 20s for Monday.

Really screws with the local flora.

Die Winter ... Die!!

High school German class screwed me up. My first reaction to that headline was "Shouldn't that be 'Der Winter... Der!!'?" until I saw the dead snowman.

It was a devastatingly brutal two days! Wind chills to 25 degrees above zero! Had to put on my fur-lined sandals.

If you would post your address, I’m sure that several thousand (Including ME) Freepers would be more than happy to each mail you a large box of snow.
You are as bad as the brother who calls me nightly with the temperature report 7 miles SOUTH of Miami. Phoo on you.

You are fortunate to be in Texas. Temps here in west Michigan frequently get to -18 or -20 and that is without the wind chill. This has been a bad winter, not as much snow as last year but way colder. We have burned up more wood than usual. As we get older each winter seems to get harder and last longer, and on the upside each spring is sweeter. I look at my garden completely covered with easily a foot of snow and I can’t wait to turn it over. It’s been in the teens for highs this week and I need to bundle up and bring in wood again. Hope your weight continues to rise. I could spare 30 pounds and if I could give it to you I would. If you like peanut butter, it’s great for putting on weight and lots of protein too.

What is this “winter” you speak of?

Well it's kind of like the weather you experience in Phoenix during August.

Only it's much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much colder;

much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much more slippery;

much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much darker and grayer;

and much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much snowier.

And the driving is much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much,much, much, scarier, slower and more dangerous.

Other than that, though, it's pretty much like Phoenix in August.

All we have to keep warm are the heat pumps in our AC units. They don’t work below 40.

It always puzzles me when I read that sort of report because ours works down to 28 or even lower (to keep house at 69 or so), even though it's a low-tier Coleman trailer unit and is 16 years old. But I often shut the HVAC system off entirely and use electric oil-filled radiators, because they're so much more comfortable.

I think its because ours are designed to be better AC units.

There is a feature called “emergency heat’ which basically just means there’s a massive element it blows air over. The electric meter nearly takes off when you turn it on.

My wife wants to strangle me. I kept telling her through the very cold days of early February here in Wisconsin that we’d be seeing balmy, spring weather in a few weeks. Now the forecast is for an extremely cold early March.
