Its estimated that at least 400 U.S. doctors kill themselves every year. Many are struggling with depression, anxiety, or addiction.
Greg Miday was a promising young doctor with a prestigious oncology fellowship in St. Louis. He spoke conversational Spanish, volunteered with the homeless, and played the piano as if hed been born to it. He had rugged good looks, with dark wavy hair and a tall, athletic build. Everybodysiblings, patients, friends, nurses, professors, fellow doctors, and above all, his physician-parentsadored him.
On the evening of June 21, 2012, Greg drew a bath, lit candles, and put his iPod on speaker. He drank a copious quantity of vodka, and placed family photos on the ceramic ledge of the tub. At some point, he scribbled out a note that read:
Dear Some,
My Family, I love you. To others who have been good friends, I love you too. This is just the end of the line for my particular train. Earth wasnt a particularly great place for me. Well see what else is out there. Will miss you all! Am sorry for what its worth. Greg Miday.
Then he climbed into the warm water and with surgical skill, punctured the arteries carrying blood to his hands and feet.
His parents called the next morning, but got no answer. Frantic, they reached his landlady, who summoned the St. Louis police after she heard music playing from the apartment but could not get Miday to open the door.
St. Louis police found the body. He was 29 years old.

RE: Well terrorism is an attack on our way of life. Its a worthy thing to react to.
I never said it wasn’t. I was referring to PERCENTAGE of death compared to the population.
Deaths by killing whether it is by terrorists or suicide are worthy things to react to.
Accidents are tragic to, but the difference between this and the other two is that accidents are NOT deliberate acts of killing while terrorism and suicides are.
RE: Its the and no one is talking about it that makes it silly
Well, let’s talk about it then, I think it is an interesting thing to notice that Physicians are more prone to kill themselves relative to most other profession.
If it is because of stress, then let’s compare the rate of doctor suicides to say, Nurses or Police detectives. That would be interesting too.
I see it as totally expected. People in a high stress profession with ready access to self medication SHOULD be killing themselves more often. If they were killing themselves significantly LESS often than the general population THAT would be interesting.

All very nice, but it has nothing to do with why people commit suicide.

That was three years ago.
I expected Nurses to be on the top 20 but they aren’t. I also did not see Border Patrol agents or Military Personnel, or Emergency Workers.
What’s interesting there really is the small variations. Everybody in that 1.3x zone could easily just be statistical noise. We do that with a lot of stuff, a small statistical variation puts a group in a “most likely” situation and we ignore how small the variation really is.
