I did the Adobe upgrade this morning.
The Yosemite program helped.

Latest “update” dragged down my iPAD MINI something wicked! Use my MacBook Air as my base and that is fine. All other devices work fine. But my iPad is crawling most of the time. Of course, usual fixes such as turn off Java, re-start WiFi, etc. help, but then I’m not able to view some things because Java off....

I just “upgraded” to Snow Leopard.

Or as this guy called it, "Essnowwwe Layoparrrrrd."

I also like his pronunciation of "portfolio" ("powrrfowwio"?)

Biggilrl, one of our fellow Freepers, had a question which it appears has been answered by our ever helpful group of Mac users. However her question has general interest so I thought I should ping the list with her question and also provide an explanation.

Biggirl was essentially asking why she could not see the full URL on the address bar in Safari. This is actually a safety and security measure for all of us. When we connect to a CERTIFIED Website, meaning one where there is a CERTIFICATE on file that the website is actually the REAL website to which we actually wished to connect, we will see only the NAME of the website.

However, if there is NO CERTIFICATE on file, or the CERTIFICATE has lapsed, you will see the entire URL of the website.

How is this helpful to us? If we are attempting to connect to a bank, it WILL have a CERTIFICATE on file. If we see a full URL, we are connected to a FAKE site, without a CERTIFICATE and an address that has somehow intercepted our attempt to connect to the bank! DO NOT PUT IN YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD! If we see only the name of the bank website, we are OK to proceed.

For many websites, there may not be a certificate. These are your cousin's Jim's website, or the website of the auto repair site down the street, or a restaurant where you are thinking about eating tonight. . . but they are unimportant in the scheme of internet security. However, those that will require memberships such as FreeRepublic.com will usually have a certificate assuring that you are on the correct website.

Apple has designed the Address Bar to assist us in knowing when we are where we are supposed to be. — PING!

Apple Safari's Built in Security Ping!

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.

I decided not to upgrade to Yosemite since I don’t have any iOS devices to use with it, and don’t plan on getting any. I weighed the options of what it would offer me, and decided I’m perfectly happy with keeping 10.9.5 on my MacBook Pro.

"Now the ClarisWorks drawing program doesn’t work."

Are you getting a message that says it can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer? If so...check out this page:

This is for Mountain Lion, but I had the same problem with a couple of application programs when I upgraded to Mavericks, and by using this procedure, I was able to use them again.

Now the ClarisWorks drawing program doesn’t work.

All ClarisWorks (AppleWorks) were PowerPC based Apple MacOS 9.2 software applications.

Apple supported Mac MacOS apps for five years beyond the switch to OS X in 2001 with the use of Rosetta Emulation of MacOS 9.2 under OS X on PowerPC. When Apple moved to the Intel processor, for five years, they supported BOTH PowerPC and Intel processors, but with OS X Snow Leopard, Apple finally dropped support for the PowerPC processor and Rosetta Emulation could no longer work, in August of 2009, because it was Intel processor only. Apple gave ample warning these applications would not continue to work.

Is there a similar drawing program available? I bought the nine month license for EazyDraw but there’s a lot to learn.

That advice applies to HTTPS sites. FR does not use HTTPS. Attempting to connect to FR via HTTPS fails with ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, meaning it heard you knock on port 443 but it doesn't want to talk.

The more common scenario is, you connect to your bank on port 80, but it immediately redirects your browser to a secure connection on port 443.

I’d much prefer some other visual cue to let me know there is no certificate. I like seeing the URL and dislike having to click it to get it.

Good luck, Biggirl! I upgraded to Yosemite last fall, and there are/were some annoying things about it, but overall it’s great.

If you use your Mac a lot, you’ll probably get used to the quirks in a couple of days.

Have you run into the invisible scroll bar thing yet?

Safari->Preferences.
Go to "Advanced" tab.
Select "Smart Search Field: Show full website address"

To see the full website address in the new Safari (8.0.4), under “Safari” in the menu bar, open “Preferences”, choose “Advanced” and then check the first item “Smart Search Field: Show full website address” in the “Advanced” tab.

Better to just click in the address bar. . . and then you can always see the full URL. . . but still retain the security feature. By turning it off, you won't be able to know when you are connected to an un-certificated spoofed site.

There are lots. Go into the Mac App Store under the Black Apple Menu and put "Drawing" into the search requester. . . you'll see lots of drawing programs available. Any that have "GET" in the green bubble are freeware.

Thank-you for that information because this is the first time I see just a name and not the URL.

In other words, this version of OS X was set up to insure the security of the Apple products.

No, that is not the case. It applies to legitimate sites. If someone were to SPOOF the URL of FreeRepublic, then the entire URL would be displayed, not just the name "freerepublic.com". If the URL is being spoofed, Safari will display the actual URL. It has nothing to do with HTTPS. . .

What I wrote is how Safari's address bar works. If you are being connected to a site that is not what it purports to be, you will see the entire URL so that you can check it for authenticity. If it is the correct site, you will only see the primary Domain name.
