Not just for sushi but for research. You know that burning sensation when you eat wasabi?
Researchers at University of California San Francisco think new information about the so-called wasabi receptor can help improve pain medications.
The wasabi receptor is a protein inside our nerve cells. It reacts to spicy things like wasabi, and even tear gas. UCSF researchers used new imaging technology to better map the protein.
They're experimenting with blocking the pain receptor's response. Pain medications and anti-itch medications could become more effective as a result.
Is horseradish not ‘lockjaw’ enough for the hipster pretentious trendies?
Sushi and sashimi are just wasabi delivery vehicles.
And if you have had REAL wasabi, the green horseradish really is pale — but it does the job in a pinch.
I think I’ll give it a try right now with my evening hydroco/acetamin (Norco) I love Wasabi!
Peppers like jalapenos are supposed to help with pain and blood pressure also.
I've said that exact phrase to friends many times
It’s good on sushi in pea-sized amounts. Anything more will burn.
Never take the “eat the whole glob of wasabi at once “ challenge....
It will feel like your face got guillotined off your head...
I know
And if you have had REAL wasabi, the green horseradish really is pale but it does the job in a pinch.
Full and complete agreement here, my FRiend. I have been told that it looks like I am spreading cream cheese or PB when using wasabi, based on the amounts I use.
Consuming foods, sauces, etc. with heat/flavor is an adult-onset phenomenon for me as I did not consume any spicy/hot/flavorful foods as a kid. Once the switch was turned on, it has been fun!
I am OK with the green stuff at the Asian restaurants that I frequent being green food coloring in a horseradish paste, since I like horseradish. (Try it with a strawberry sometime...!) Upon discovering the price of real wasabi I realized that unless I was at a higher-end Asian place (which is unlikely for me...) I was not eating "real" wasabi.
For me, it's not about painful heat but the right amount of heat with flavor!
It feels good to have the lighting shoot through your brain.
Wasabi is unique in that it activates both receptors that peppers and horse radish activate individually.
"Wasssssaaaabi."
“The right amount of heat with flavor!”
That is what the professionals state.
>>Its good on sushi in pea-sized amounts. Anything more will burn.<<
That’s the point! ;)
Maybe I should consider going Pro...I'd probably place the Senior/Master's Circuit though...
I do not like fish and seafood, I would never eat sushi. I can barely a tuna and mayo sandwich - very very occasionally
way off topic, huh?
From the Midwest or Mountain states?
>>way off topic, huh?<<
It depends on whether they were looking for mayo receptors as well, I suppose :)
I don’t think it really matters where the fish come from, I don’t think I’ll like it
