The thing that keeps the Mosin-Nagant going is the cheap availability of spare parts and ammunition. It’s still a very good sniping rifle up to around 400-600 yards range.

If there’s any weapon that deserves the most credit for beating back Nazi German...

Really? Patton said the best weapon was the M1Garand. Chesty Puller preferred the Springfield 03. To say that the Soviet union beat the Germans is to poke a finger in the eye of the Americans that fought and died in Europe. You discredit the 101st Airborne that held out in Bastone. Give me a Springfield.

I have one but it won’t expel the used cartridge. It stays in the barrel and you have to clear it out.

Yes....a good bolt action rifle. I have a 1936 K98 made in the Mauser Oberndorf factory (SN 42) that is a meticulously crafted marvel that would more than equal what a MN could do.

The problem is numbers and accommodations made in producing the weapon in mass quantities. It was the same for the main battle rifle, the main tank (T34 and the M-4) - the main anything, really. Production. At the end of the war, this country was producing a Liberty ship each day.

If I had my druthers, the Garand is the battle weapon of choice among these. Millions built and used by our forces. There is a reason why Patton valued it so.

I’ve had mixed luck with the Mosin’s. I bought one from a coworker for $50, and made the mistake of not checking the barrel carefully. It turned out to be corroded so badly that the rifle was basically useless (couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with it).

All said, I’d much rather have any number of other rifles. About the only thing the Mosin has going for it is that it’s cheap.

I would note both Westinghouse and Remington produced the M-N. Approx. 2 million.

When I was a kid in the mid 60’s, I sent away for a surplus catalog, and among others, they offered Mosin and Tokarev rifles for the princely sum of $12.98 each, and they’d send them parcel post to your door. Last Tokarev I saw at a gun show was over $400...

Years ago, I saw a list of the BEST BOLT ACTION rifles in WWII. The M-N was not included.
Best Battle Rifle-British .303 SMLE.
Best Target rifle-US 1903 Springfild.
Best hunting rifle-M98 Mauser.
Toughest action-Arisaka.
Wonder if the M-N would be classified as the meanist kicker.

Most of the commie guns are very reliable and some like the venerable Mosin are reasonably accurate

Not like an M98 or Springy but decent

The further west in Former Commie Nation States for country of origin the better

However the Mosin was also made by American companies too early on

Bet those are valuable

We have several

My kids love them

Most people come to FR to argue

Or complain

This thread like many gun threads

Which I love anyhow

Is why I avoid clubby gun stores and organized ranges

Too much personality extension through weaponry

I took my 14 year old to a local black gun style shop

All the brass heads not very friendly know it alls

My sons understands guns are TOOLS for self preservation food and liberty
Some are art.... Purdey Citori etc

They don’t make you a man
