The Apple Watch Is Neat, But That Is All

PEOPLE have been raving about the Apple Watch, so it is probably time for a rant from a devil’s advocate.

For starters, Apple’s smartwatch is neat, but that might be the only thing it has going for it. If the product’s intended function is providing you with around-the-clock health information, then there are a lot of roadblocks that need to be addressed.

Here are five: (...) 1. Battery life is as terrible as you would expect. 2. Too little screen for too much information. 3. It is too big. 4. Even the positive reviews are negative. 5. The Apple Watch could still fail. (...)

“You mistake hatred or contempt for a product or with a hatred for a company.”

Really...

“I don’t hate Apple. I hate the concept of LEMMINGS doing whatever Apple tells them to buy.”

I don’t know that I’ve “done” something I’ve been “told to buy”...

Regardless, you have a large misconception. People buy Apple products most often because they’re useful, and better than the competition’s products in tangible ways.

“But buyers are stupid and gullible.”

Right. Everyone is “stupid and gullible” besides...you. Correct?

“So I can’t blame Apple for making lots of money over stupid schmucks. That will calm down after people realize their worthless purchase.”

Just as we’ve heard of all the returned Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods etc.? Sure...

“That’s the beauty of capital economics.”

Apple is the king of “capital economics”, with a market cap that dwarfs the #2 company. By that metric, you should be an Apple lover. :-)

“And our right to peaceably discuss our disgust of all things in a forum without being sent to the gallows.”

I believe you’re conflating “capital economics” with the “First Amendment”. Those are two very different things.

Ask Hamburg and Dresden.

That was God's work? And for their sins?

There are many watches whose functionality is just as good or better than a Rolex. Why do Rolex owners buy Rolex Watches and not the others?

For exactly the reason that they convey high social status. Humans haven't changed much since forever. :)

With Dennis ... Apple has been on the verge of going out of business and tanking ... for all the years I’ve seen him posting about Apple on Free Republic. It must be embarrassing to be consistently wrong years on end ... :-) ...

Nah, Dennis isn't "wrong". He's "right" -- but in an alternate universe. In his world, Apple fails. Simple.

It's very convenient to construct one's own "Reality". It avoid all that pesky trouble dealing with the one the rest of us live in.

Just kidding. Well, maybe not... :-)

“No one has claimed they are intending to do that.”

To be fair, I did. Constant heart rate monitoring interests me. It’s not necessary, so no need for expensive and bulky medical gear, but having faced death 4 times over I’m interested in more details about what my ticker is doing. If that can be done easily with a $400 watch (a dollar a day in a fun package with many other uses), then I’d expect Up Yours, Marxist would wish me well rather than hurtle insults.

Mr. Marxist,

It certainly sounds like you would prefer people just swallow your post with no real thinking.

Here’s a thought - ever since the very first rumors a few years ago of an upcoming “iWatch” - people have been chomping at the bit for it - sight unseen.

Many of the arguments mirror those made against the first of the smartphones - including Apple’s iPhone. What a flop that market has been...

And name ONE product that could, at the drop of a hat, be cut off if proven unprofitable... This is a reality across products and companies... It is the risk one takes when jumping on new technology and products.

And by the way - watches have been moving towards a “gender neutral” fashion for a while now - not that I agree with it or think its cool, just a fact.

Xiaomi will be coming out with a superior smartwatch. If I were you I would wait for this one. Don’t flush your money down the toilet on this bedeviled Apple Watch. Tim Kooks problems will become your problems.

Mixing hi-tech ecosystems is not something smart people do ... :-) ... Apple’s ecosystem is much more developed and professional, and has a much wider user base and hospital medical systems already with apps for their patients and for medical trials. Apple’s got the future on this one!

Apple is kind of doing OK but this smart watch fiasco will put a major dent in their credibility right when their major enemies xiaomi and Lenovo are nipping at their heels. Plus Apples anti-gay policies are hurting sales. Right when the hipster crowd is abandoning un-cool Apple.

Among the non tech savvy gays, females and hipsters perception is everything. This is killing CRApple! And xiaomi is gaining!

Wait, what?

Apple has ANTI-gay policies? Who knew?

I thought "the problem" was that Apple had adopted radically PRO-gay policies.

I'm so confused...

This real world pulse oximeter actually works. The one in the crappy Apple watch won't have any accuracy
