The Apple Watch Is Neat, But That Is All
Business Day Live ^ | April 23 2015, 12:42 UTC | Jeffrey Joslin

PEOPLE have been raving about the Apple Watch, so it is probably time for a rant from a devil’s advocate.

For starters, Apple’s smartwatch is neat, but that might be the only thing it has going for it. If the product’s intended function is providing you with around-the-clock health information, then there are a lot of roadblocks that need to be addressed.

Here are five: (...) 1. Battery life is as terrible as you would expect. 2. Too little screen for too much information. 3. It is too big. 4. Even the positive reviews are negative. 5. The Apple Watch could still fail. (...)

Wow, you may have just enlightened me on a question I’ve had for some time...why do otherwise rational folks have what is (to me anyhow) an irrational, almost visceral, dislike/hatred for Apple products and users of Apple products. It’s sad that anyone would hold the mistaken opinion that Apple product users use those products to say “I’m better than you.”. The folks I know who use iPhones and/or iMacs use them for their technical excellence and VERY friendly UI. I’m sorry you don’t understand that.

You are taking offense where none was intended. It is just a fact of human nature that people want symbols of hipness and prosperity to be seen by other people. This usually takes the form of Jewelry or expensive clothes, but I perceive the current popularity of the Apple Watch is just another manifestation of this basic human urge.

The number one driving factor behind it's popularity is the anticipation of others seeing the purchaser wearing it. It might as well be a Gucci handbag, or Prada shoes. It's functionality or usefulness is entirely secondary in the reasons why most people want it. ($20,000.00 version sold out? Really? For Functionality?)

I'm sure that you and your friends are the exception. It is all those other people who buy the latest and fanciest jewelry to show how much better they are than the average slob.

And yes, Apple makes very fine products from a technical standpoint.

When you post on a public thread, it’s like talking in a small room devoted to a topic. Just because you’re not looking at someone in particular when you speak does not deny them the right to respond.

Just a guess, but if ya can’t handle the comments and opinions of others, you sure in hell do not belong on this site.

I’m just observing that you’re spending considerable time and energy telling others you’re not interested in the topic at hand, and being very rude to those who wonder why you’re doing so.

It does look too big

I tried on the 42mm Sport, my wrists are 170 mm (not big).

It's not too big. I don't know what it's for, but it's not too big.

I know a couple people who have these “smart watches” right now.
It just doesn’t make sense you still need a phone in your pocket? It’s a fad. A very expensive fad.

Wouldn’t!t that be enough for you? Why wait for the downfall, and grief of Tim Cook? You can be happy every minute of every day knowing that people are suffering.

Not sure if you noticed, but Tim Cook just put the Might of Multi-Billion dollars Apple Computer corporation behind his threats and intimidation directed at the government of Indiana and Arkansas.

He has now made his "grief" a very necessary condition of restoring the proper relationship between Corporations and the Consent of the Governed. If he is allowed to get away with it, it will be just another step in the direction of the coming fascism.

People used to criticize the perceived Jewish Complacency in the face of the burgeoning Nazi Anti-Semitism of the 1930s. Well, the Christians in this nation are now in exactly the same situation as were the Jews in 1930s Germany. Tim Cook, et al, is now a threat to our lives and our beliefs.

You funny. I have a mate (opposite gender even!), and my buying a Watch is going to highly piss her off, as well the ugly used manual transmission gas guzzling Jeep I’m planning to get. If buying jewelry and cars is about sex, sure am wantonly destroying my chances of getting laid.

Actually ... it’s the APPLE-HATER JIHADISTS here on Free Republic who won’t — and don’t — like the Apple Watch and never miss an opportunity to jump on threads that those who do like and buy Apple products ... are on.

I’ve always wondered what kind of psychiatric problem it is, that these APPLE-HATER JIHADISTS have, that make them so obsessive/compulsive to get onto threads on a subject and product they hate and proceed to make unlimited posts there repeatedly telling everyone that they hate it and that anyone else who likes those products they hate ... is a fool! ... LOL ...

Just a guess, but if ya can’t handle the comments and opinions of others, you sure in hell do not belong on this site.

And this is the best advice. These are just words on a screen. For the most part they do not represent any serious difficulty in your life, so most people need to keep this in perspective.

Sometimes I get insulted 16 ways before lunch, and you just have to let it slide off you like water off a duck's back. It doesn't amount to anything in the long run.

Refurbished units usually are sold a generation back ... that is, the prior version. Now those are good deals, in that Apple really gives you a new unit (they rebuild it and replace cases) and you get a full new product warranty, and you can also get an Apple Care extension on it ... and then you get (probably, on the Apple Watch) maybe $50 off new price. That would be a pretty good deal for some, who may want it.

However, I would rather get a newer and updated version of the Apple Watch, if I had that choice in front of me. The $50 would be better spent on NEW CAPABILITIES on the next version!

Yep! It’s quite humorous to hear these Apple Haters repeating the same line over and over on all the new and wildly successful products that Apple puts out ... LOL ...

Perhaps for the one you are with, but the Human mind has a funny subconscious that is always considering the possibility of getting something different. Monogamy does not actually seem to be a natural condition for humans.

No, the point I am making is much broader and more subtle than you seem to be taking it. Virtually everything we do socially is intended to lead back to somehow getting sex out of the deal. Our personalities, the way we dress, the way we talk, our gestures, etc.

One of the reason the aristocrats wore frilly clothes and ridiculous shoes is to send the message to everyone that "they don't work." Showing everyone that they don't work tells people immediately that they are rich, and for Males, that is a powerful aphrodisiac to attract potential Females.

Females also had methods of broadcasting beneficial characteristics about themselves.

We see the same dynamics in modern society, they just manifest in different ways, such as this current Apple Watch. The Tesla roadster is another example of such a dynamic. "Wait till the babes see me in this!" I suspect a lot of buyers think. :)

I can't speak for others, but I have always admired Apple's engineering skills. It is this business of a Multi-Billion Dollar Corporation led by a Homosexual forcing a State government to gut a religious freedom bill that has turned me into a "Apple Hater." Till recently, I had no beef at all with Apple. Now I regard them as part of an Evil Empire, and a potential threat to my beliefs and eventually my life.

There needs to be some serious pushback because of Apple Corporation entering the Arena of politics in a deliberately partisan and threatening manner.

>>It’s functionality is irrelevant to it’s true purpose. <<

Right. “My A-watch is more expensive than yours nananana”

And I’m an Apple fanboy since 1995.
