Another coyote caught in Manhattan as police track down critter in Battery Park City: officials
NY Daily News ^ | April 25, 2015 | CAITLIN NOLAN

Police caught another not-so-wily coyote Saturday morning in lower Manhattan after a nearly hour-long pursuit, officials said.

The critter was first spotted around 7:30 a.m. in Battery Park City, police said.

Cops quickly responded, chasing after the fast-moving critter on foot and in police cruisers, authorities said.

The coyote was eventually cornered near a cafe at North Cove Marina about an hour after being first spotted, cops said.

Police shot the animal with tranquilizer darts, placed it in a cage and brought it to Animal Care & Control’s East Harlem facility.

It is unclear if the coyote captured Saturday was the same animal that eluded capture on the Upper West Side earlier in the week.

Coyotes have become an increasingly common sight in the city. One was even spotted on the roof of a Long Island City, Queens, bar March 29 before disappearing without a trace.

On April 14, a coyote was snared by cops in Chelsea and later released in the Bronx.

Coyotes were also captured by police in the Stuyvesant Town apartment complex Jan. 25 and in Riverside Park on the Upper West Side two weeks earlier

I do not want to see coyotes roaming my streets. Too many small cats and dogs would fall prey to them, and I don't fancy their howling at night either. And what about when I go birdwatching? Do I now have to worry about being attacked by one of those mangy things?

I always hear city people talking about how rural people should tolerate wolves. And when a swimmer gets killed by a great white, I hear city people talk about how this is their ecosystem that we have intruded into.

Maybe the people in the city should learn to live in their ecosystem, and to not upset the “delicate balance”. Nature put that coyote there ya know.

As for being attacked, the biggest they get is 45 pounds. Could you fight off the average sized 6 year old?

Coyotes,,, and NYC lives in terror. lol

Sure was never me advocating that rural people should tolerate wolves. Not when they prey on your valuable livestock or endanger your children. And you won’t hear me taking the shark’s side after an attack (was just one yesterday in Australia). You’re confusing me with a witless libtard. I just don’t need any wild mangy predator (and they go bigger than 45 lbs, especially if hybridized with wolf or large dog) around here.

[[Do I now have to worry about being attacked by one of those mangy things? ]]

Only if they are rabid, or you are 2 feet tall with long pointed ears and hop a lot- The reason coyotes are m oving into cities is because there are lots of stray cats, dogs, rats, mice, that eat the garbage left out by people- it’s easy pickings for the coyotes- A healthy coyotes will almost never be seen during the day- as they hunt at night and pretty much stay hidden during day- I’ve hunted all my life in rural areas where they are infested with coyotes, and I’ve only ever seen one- running away at 100 miles an hour with tail tucked between it’s legs

Now, a rabid coyote is another story- IF you see one during day, and it doesn’t run as you approach- then it could very well be rabid- If you can- just carry a stout walking stick with you- but chances of you actually running into a coyote are very rare- like I said, I’ve hunted among them all my life- and never seen but one- and that’s just cuz it was windy and it didn’t hear me- usually coyotes will smell or hear you long before you see them and be long gone

and btw- you’ve had lots of coyotes in your city for a very long time- but it’s just that they are getting overpopulated, and the competition for food is increasing- so they are just coming out more in daytime to better their chances of survival- They showed a video of inner city Chicago once, and a small park was loaded with coyotes, but people rarely ever saw them- it was unreal how many there were-

But bottom line is- the chances of seeing a coyote are probably worse than winning the lottery- or being struck by lightening- if you’re really worried about it- carry mace-

I’ve had more encounters In the wild with black bears than I have with coyotes- and foxes we see all the time right in town- they just go about their business and no one is the wiser-

Look at it this way- they are keeping the mouse and rat population down (this is their main prey- not cats and dogs- although they will take them occasionally IF the opportunity presents itself, and wouldn’t prove too dangerous for the coyote- coyotes are really quite cautious)- you are more at risk of getting hunta virus, bubonic plague, lyme disease, from rats and mice than you are ever seeing a coyote personally-

[[(and they go bigger than 45 lbs, especially if hybridized with wolf or large dog)]]

Very rare- and may not even be possible- ‘coydogs’ (coyote/dog hybrids) are a controversial subject- and they really don’t get much bigger than 60 lbs or so even if they did exist- the gene lien of the coyote is much purer than dogs- Wolf dog hybrids however occur often

“a coyote was snared by cops in Chelsea and later released in the Bronx>”

Why would they release it in another city?

Hubby and I went for a walk this evening. I had a knife on me. I see coyotes all the time in my neighborhood in AZ. I hate them.

I don’t mind coyotes, and I would see or hear them every day while working my last job. Raccoons creep me out. Can’t explain it.

So New Yorkers are crapping their designer suits over a coyote? I’ve seen them in my back yard, and if I get a clear shot at them, they don’t bother anybody anymore.

Bird watching trip extras. You can't pick and chose with nature, it's a package deal.

I don’t care if it’s Chinatown or on Riverside.
I don’t have any reasons.
I left them all behind.
I’m in a New York state of mind.
