Windows 10: Build 10074 is still for the brave - but it's looking good

Build 2015

Microsoft has released preview Build 10074 of Windows 10 at its Build developer event in San Francisco.

It is only a week since the previous preview build (10061) arrived, but this one is a milestone available even to users who prefer to stick with the more stable releases – the “slow” update cycle in Windows Insider terms. This also means you can get an ISO image for a clean install.

Windows 10 is set for release this summer, according to Microsoft, with AMD CEO Lisa Su letting slip that it may be done by the end of July. Not long to go, then.

Patches from Dell? That sounds like a hardware issue. What are the patches for? Dell usually lets you sync the updates directly from Microsoft.

Win 7 has been pretty stable for me (both at work and home). I do have my frustrations with it but it is okay (so far, crossing my fingers!).

But yes, I agree with you completely. MS is not the best.

apparently their philosophy is that it’s better to be complaint with a few obscure applications that very few people use, than it is to give the people what they actually want- Why not simply rewrite the applications to be compliant with the operating system in the first place? I get so tired of constantly having to relearn crap that should be standard operating procedure - it should be universal- give the people a choice about which style they like- and form applications to conform to these standard universal values-

Instead they have to be a pain In the neck and force the people/users/customers to conform over and over and over again- They can not leave something that is unbroken alone- they constantly have to muck with it- much to the aggravation of most everyone who uses it-

Yeh. I swore I’d stop tinkering at 10061 but this one is a clean install from an ISO. Back on the treadmill...

Ya. Me too. Hate having relearn the GUI. New isn't better.

BTW, Linux (Ubuntu) drifted off in the weeds too with its unity GUI.

That's one of the main reasons that I'm still a CentOS/RedHat fan. I maintain about 60 Ubuntu servers at my job, but thankfully I only work with them at the Bash shell commandline level, and don't see any Unity desktop stuff. I installed the Unity desktop once at home just to try it, and ran screaming. I suppose some folks like it, they can have my share too.

Likewise. Wow.

I am still running 10.0 but I’ll probably have to upgrade sometime in the future. Although I am holding out.

Sounds like you are a programmer/IT person vs a user. I am mostly a user but I have played around with the server and Apache a little.

Bottom line: new isn’t always improved.

Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 10074
http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-releases-windows-10-build-10074/?tag=nl.e539&s_cid=e539&ttag=e539&ftag=TRE17cfd61

This release marks the surprising return of Aero Glass, the transparent effect behind some user interface elements that debuted in Windows Vista, was refined in Windows 7, and disappeared with the launch of the flat Windows 8 user interface. In this build, Microsoft is conducting an A-B test, with half of Windows 10 installations getting the transparency effect behind the Start menu and taskbar and the other half getting a blur, “frosted glass” effect.

The new build fixes one embarrassing bug from last week’s release. You can now launch Windows desktop apps from the Start menu, instead of having to first pin the app to the taskbar.

The blog post introducing today’s release contains a laundry list of other improvements, including visual changes that join the Start menu and Cortana, additional Cortana capabilities (you can now ask for weather information and stock quotes, for example), improvements in the behavior of task-switching shortcuts, and improvements in the Continuum feature on hybrid touch-enabled devices.

PC Linux looks good. My Linux friend uses it. He uses zero crap from Apple. He prefers Linux but will install Windows and was very excited about Windoz 10

As a medical guy I see GUI as a Genital/Urinary infection.

Technical language is best limited to technical audiences and that goes double for acronyms and abbreviations.

My fault, bit of a habit for me, but to clarify I meant to say graphical user interface, the main desktop screen that you see the background wall paper and windows icons with the start button below.

Thanks! I read the IT posts as if I might learn something. Occasionally, I do.

Although the more verbose GUI interface can get you in trouble too.
