WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD VOLUME 18 MAY 1, 2015
freerepublic | May 1, 2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 05/01/2015 12:41:21 PM PDT by greeneyes

Good afternoon Gardeners! We have the most beautiful day so far this week. Temps in 60s and beautiful sun shine and blue sky. Truly a gift from God.

I just wanted to mention to those who may have missed JRandomFreeper's post yesterday, that he has started his Chemo Therapy today, and needs your prayers. Thank you all in advance for helping with this request.

Not much has changed here. I have been taking the tomatoes in and out. Yesterday, I forgot and left them outside, but they seem to be ok. Hubby plans to plant corn this weekend. I'll wait 2 or 3 weeks before I begin sprouting my corn seeds.

Did I mention that I ordered some Evergreen Corn to try this year? Should be an interesting experiment. I left the rye go too long and now it has some seeds. They are not ripe yet, but hubby wants me to let it go and save the seed.

Problem is, he bought them at the feed store, and doesn't really know what they are other than rye. So I think I'll just pass on that. Besides, a short maturity variety will be going in there, so I doubt I have enough time left for it to mature.

I'll have to leave pretty soon to finish up some errands that I didn't quite get around to, that absolutely have to get done today. So if I go dark for a while, please forgive me - I'll be back later.

Tomorrow we planned to go to the neighboring town to visit the farmer's market, but that was before I remembered the Derby is this weekend. Probably will postpone the trip, if not we'll reduce the number of other places to visit while we are over there.

Have a great weekend everyone. God Bless.

Thank you for your input. I just got back from doing all the chores I had to do while I had a driver. I'm completely worn out.

Thanks … I picked about 2 quarts of early berries yesterday. Today I spread compost on the potato patch plus some weeding here and there while Lady Bender spaded the rest corn patch. It was windy and cool ~~~

Lol, I was thrilled with the five strawberries I picked today, and they look pathetic compared to yours.

I get most of my corn seed from Baker’s Creek. They test their seed, and have noted that it is getting harder and harder to find corn seed that has not been contaminated by GMO/cross.

I plant it as far away as I can from Hubby’s, and stagger it by at least 3 weeks hoping to avoid unintentional crosses. Just so I can maybe have some viable seeds to use if needed.

I was intrigued to read somewhere that someone finally sued Monsanto for contaminating their organic crop - tee hee. Turn about is fair play they say.

I also read an interesting article regarding how susceptible our corn output has become to some sort of widespread disease, because the bases of the hybrids have so little diversity these days. Too long ago for me to recall the details though.

There is a guy from the Pacific Northwest away from the corn belt that is working with some of the heirlooms to get a cross that will be sweeter and more tender than some of the old varieties. That will be interesting to see how it turns out.

It is pretty nifty, but I’m gonna have to get out there and clean it up a bit. Storms have left behind quite a mess, and hen bit and other weeds are sprouting all over the place.

Mine is mostly heirloom, or old hybrid varieties.

We are having some great thunderstorms right now. Lots of noise and light, and not much damage.

I love the rain. I had to get up to enjoy it.

Now if the lights stay on...

Good thing I've got the emergency power going on.

--------------------------------------------------------------

We're just starting (and need badly) a long, gentle soaker that will last, off and on, most of the week. We have 2 "new" 7,000W (continuous, not surge) generators, and an old 5,000 W. We also have a UPS for the computer, and another for the DVR & TV; also a rechargeable LED flashlight that plugs in, and turns on if the power fails.

The old one was used a lot in Oregon, until we finally convinced the power company that we really were building a home.

The "new" ones are nearly 20 years old, but one is still in the shipping carton, and the other one was used for the first time 4 years ago, when we lost power for nearly a week from a forest fire. I also used it last year to run the electric log splitter on the back & beyond the garden.

We bought the new ones because we were constantly losing power for up to an hour or so in Oregon, with the lines running next to pavement, or buried; and the location here is much more remote, with the line mostly through heavy woods, and much severer weather---but we rarely lose power.

To: Marcella

Hey Marcella, guess what I found? After scouring the garage, poking around in the garden where I planted them last year, I found the bush cucumber plant tag. Whenever I plant anything new I always save the tag. Bugged me because I couldn’t find it anywhere. I tilled the garden up 3 times, the 3rd time being yesterday. Went down to plant this morning and raked the whole garden first to smooth it out. About 40 feet from where I had planted then I found the plant tag. Maybe it was down deep in the soil and I couldn’t find it before, got caught up in the tiller blade (it is a little chewed up) and then made it’s way down the garden. I’m happy because it will be a couple of weeks yet before the plants are at that nursery. The tag says it’s from Chef Jeff’s (www.chefjeff.com) No specific name but it’s just called a Bush Pickle. There is a little info on the website. They are great for eating and for pickling and they grew well in a large tomato cage. I had all I needed and gave away lots. Hope that helps. Just in case the seeds don’t work out. I started some seeds but am going to get a new plant too.

I'd have it set up so that the gensets were a way from the house and quiet. And set up for remote start.. a lot are almost set up for that anyway.

And then I'd use fool out of it when the weather turned crappy.

I was up too late last night with the weather. I went to bed around 2am.

So I took a nap today.

Boy did I need that. I slept HARD for over an hour.

Good nap. Now for something to eat.

Well. I got that cheap rice cooker with no shipping.

So I had to try it out.

I was less than thrilled at the automation, including the 'keep warm' option that my son-in-law's rice cooker does so well.. all day long.

But at least I can start this one and walk away and know I don't have to fight to get it right.

I know I could do better. This will work for now.

I'll start getting some rice every day.

Not many calories, but good for my sour-belly that I get.

I feel like an idiot for explaining how I cook my rice - to a real cook. I get it why you need an appliance and sorry. Glad you found one with free shipping. I love deals like that. God bless!

Nope. Never feel stupid. I may learn something.

I have cooked many thousands of pounds of rice. Mostly the same way every time.

Very different cooking for myself and cooking for 1500 of my closest friends. LOL!

I'm still going to look for one that handles warming all day without burning the rice or making it inedible.

I may wind up giving this as a gift. ;)

I googled “rice cooker keep warm” and there are a few after you click on shopping. Maybe one of them is what you are looking for.

Yeah.. I've looked at a lot of those.

They sure seem proud of them, don't they?

I didn't want to get a loan to get one. ;)

I'll figure it out. I'm just really, really cheap sometimes.
