Great information and links. Thanks so much. We don’t fertilize our lawn at all. Planted it 39 years ago. We run the lawn mower over the leaves and that’s the fertilizer.

If we develop a bare spot that won’t grow anything, we plant a little red clover and fescue or quick grow rye.

Our gardens get plenty of organic amendments, but not chemical. Rotation planting of certain crops helps bring up nutrients, so we try that before we add P or K.

I have a friend who has an endless supply of pallets. It’s about 2.5 feet by 3.5 feet and 4 foot tall. I estimate if I can grow it all the way to the top before harvest I can easily have 200 lbs of potatoes. But only time will tell. This the first time I have tried this.

Only thing I see, being that high it might be a pain in the butt to get the potatoes out without tearing everything apart and some potatoes might be ready before the others.

Where I am in deep SE Texas it’s generally so wet we can’t leave potatoes in the ground for too long after they are ready for harvest or they will rot.

You clearly have good drainage but I don’t know how long you can leave then in there once they are ready.

well the wife is back and doing a better job on the garden than i did.

I did discover a trick that could help others regarding celery - treat it like lettice. got three ‘harvests’ of celery off the same stalks. trim the outer stalks, leave the innermost to continue to grow. If it hadn’t gotten so darn hot so fast here in N. CA, I could have gotten 4 cuttings off the darn things.

I may cut it down about a foot.

I might build another about half the size and see which one does the best.

I know where I am it would be too wet to have it that high.

Two weeks ago we got between 14 and 16 inches of rain and another 3/4 inch Monday of this week.

Even with as good drainage as it is it would still be a box of mud for me.

I don’t think I should risk it. I may end up with a box of mud to.

Our summers are very unpredictable with rain.

I’m going to update everybody every couple of weeks on the progress.

Like I said a lot of people around here grow their potatoes in rotting hay inside tires because it’s so wet.

Might cut it in half and try it with hay instead of dirt.

Texas Fossil, I just called Johnny, it is about 6:30pm, central time and he had just gotten home. His voice sounded strong and he said he didn’t get the full treatment as time ran out for this day. He doesn’t know how much of the med he got by 5:00pm, quitting time for the employees, so he will go back for the rest but doesn’t know when, yet.

I am thankful he is back home and sounds strong. What a day he has had, there from early, to just now he is home.

I’m sure he will post to the thread after he eats and rests, etc..

Thanks for all of you caring about him - he is special to the world.
Marcella

I figured you and a lot of the folks here would find a lot of this info old news and are already doing the recommended practices. Our soil guy would probably give you a gold star since you are not losing your yard clippings and leaves, and amending the soil properly!

That’s good to know. I haven’t grown any celery yet. We use about half a stalk/month always wind up freezing or dehydrating the leftovers, so it’s not a high volume for us.

Potatoes, corn, and beans high volume so those are first. As we gradually convert from buying fresh to raising fresh we are tackling the most frequent and/or most expensive first. So celery is not tops on the list.

That said, if I don’t have celery to put in Tuna Salad, Salmon Salad, Chicken Noodle soup, or Pot Roast, for get about it! It just isn’t the same without celery.

Glad he’s doing ok, but what a shame. All that trouble to get going, and they couldn’t finish the job, so he has to go back. I hope that doesn’t decrease the effectiveness of the treatment.

We need our Johnny to have the best of care, and get well.

No I wouldn't call it old news. LOL Hubby just never liked to rake leaves or any of the rest of the yard stuff. He only mows, because you can't just let the grass grow 2 or 3 feet tall.

He also saw no reason to rake leaves or trimmings. Now he does do some raking to collect some of the stuff into a pile for the garden, but the rest just gets a run over with the mower and is left to go back to nature. As long as it's short enough to keep the health department from knocking on the door, it's ok with me.
