Bicyclist Says Driver Tried to Run Him Down Multiple Times in San Francisco
NBC Bay Area ^ | 5/9 | Christie Smith and Vince Cestone

A bicyclist said he was just riding on the road in San Francisco when a driver tried to run him down--and more than once.

Now, he wants the person behind the wheel to face justice.

The bicyclist said it was a scary ordeal for him. He said a driver tried to knock him off his bike and seemed to keep coming for him Thursday night.

According to the cyclist Anthony Ryan, a witness apparently was able to shoot some video. Ryan said he was on Phelan just North of Ocean Avenue making a left turn when a car came up behind and hit the horn. He said the driver pulled up and tried to open the door in order to knock him off the bike.

Ryan said he tried to get away by crossing the street, but the driver followed. He believes he intended to ram him. He said he tried to get a picture of the license plate, but the driver took off toward San Francisco City College.

And when he stopped at a light, things escalated even more.

"He actually put his car in reverse and tried to run into me again, and I kind of dodged him, but at that point he was behind me," Ryan said. "And I was basically riding for my life with this person behind me looking for cover between some parked cars, so I basically intentionally crashed my bike between two parked cars and leaped off my bike."

Ryan said the driver tried to side swipe him and took off. He said a number of people stopped to see if he was OK. He was leaving San Francisco State where he teaches a class. City College police responded, saying a report was filed. The car is a white two-door Honda, police said.

Ryan said he suffered bruises and scrapes.

Yup.

At the same time some bikers think they own the road and harass larger vehicle drivers. They have also driven into and killed pedestrians.

There are a$$holes that drive all sorts of vehicles, I guess.

They have also driven into and killed pedestrians.

No doubt. Given the physics of the situation, I seriously doubt any cyclist would do this on purpose.

I read the story and watch the “video”. The video shows nothing - the aftermath of what the rider says happened. You see a bike down on the right side and cars going by, but never did I see anything close to knocking over the bike.

One thing in the news narrative....”...rider says driver pulled up and tried to open door....attempted to ram him....”

One or the other....I don’t see a driver trying both. Secondly, exactly how does a driver on the left side attempt to open a door on the right side to knock off a bike rider also on the right side.

Could be bike rider’s perception and hatred because somebody honked at him, or just fell off and embarrassed....

All I saw and read was fluffed and exaggerated, appended by other bike injury filler stories. Announcer at the beginning said “bike rider was lucky to get away with his life [paraphrased]”.

It’s not all here, folks. Slow news night I guess.

Especially why the cyclist will likely end up as injured, or worse, than the pedestrian they hit.

No, no need for much of a backstory. Once, leaving a post office in the Bay Area (Alameda, actually) another driver, irate over something, managed to catch up to me by driving against traffic, pulled in front of me and stopped. Then he intentionally backed up into me. I had a little room behind me so I backed up as far as I could with the intention of pulling out. But the jerk backed up again until he hit me. Now I was wedged in.

Then he got out of his car and came back to my window, which I rolled down to find out what was eating him, but he never gave me the chance: he just spit in my face. My children, who were in the car with me were appalled. I was shocked.

Then the guy turned away, got back in his car and sped away.

Irrational road rage, I’d guess. I had never seen the guy before, don’t to this day know what his problem was, I never cut him off or did anything that could have gotten him so enraged. Just more San Francisco Bay Area crap.

True, but plenty have recklessness and disregard for others wjen such injuries or fatalities have occurred.

A bicycle, in and of itself or used by a competent user is not dangerous. It’s idiot drivers who fly into a murderous rage over the simple sight of one who are.

A silly hat, clingy short pants, shoes that look like anemic jellybeans, and not letting the clearly superior motorized vehicle pass ---

There's just so much a fella can take before he snaps

I wonder if the bicyclist was wearing an Obama/Biden shirt? I know I’d try to knock him down if he was. Or maybe the driver was shouting Allahu Akbar while doing it. That would be a big clue as to what was really going on.

Being San Fransicko maybe it was a homo trying to “rear end” the bicyclist. Pun intended.

“””I’m guessing the ‘after I flipped him the bird’ part was conveniently left out of the narrative.””

Ah, so that’s what justifies attempted murder in your mind?

Did you have any politically conservative or republican bumper stickers on your car?

“He was leaving San Francisco State where he teaches a class.”

Could have been one of his students getting revenge for a bad grade.

I am a cyclist.

There are some asshats who try to squeeze you into bad spots and yell and flip you off. You can tell we have some on this thread.

It amazes me that they get that angry by losing a few seconds out of their day to accommodate a cyclist, then they go home and sit on the sofa and watch useless television.

I used to ride a bike year round. To ensure my safety. I also used to ride as close to the curb as I could and I could guarantee that, at least once a ride, son driver would pass close enough to me to clip my ear if I weren’t the one being careful.

I learned to assume every driver in front of me would make a sudden right-hand turn without signaling and saved me many times.

Yes, I’ve also had the unpleasant experience of a bicyclist who would pass me when I was trying to turn into a parking lot. The dunderhead didn’t even consider the possibility that had I been just slightly faster than I had been, he would have plowed into my vehicle at full speed because he was out of my sight kj es.

““””I’m guessing the ‘after I flipped him the bird’ part was conveniently left out of the narrative.””

Ah, so that’s what justifies attempted murder in your mind?”

One time I was driving in the northbound lane of a two way street near my home. Its a 30 mph speed limit zone. All of the sudden I’ve got a little convertible sports car tailgaiting me. I speed it up to 40 mph to put some distance between me and him, but he too speeds it up, sticking to my rear bumper as close as he can.

Evidently me going 40 mph in a 30 mph is still not fast enough for him. I get the impression that he wants me to go faster so that he can go faster. But I decide to myself that 40 mph is as fast as I’m going to drive on this street. I refuse to go any faster.

Frustrated, the guy illegally changes lanes into the southbound lane, speeds it up, and as soon as he is alongside me he flips me the finger. Speeds it up some more to get ahead of me before changing back into the northbound lane.

Sure would have loved to have watched that guy get into a head on collision with a southbound vehicle. It would have been poetic justice. Wouldnt want anyone to get hurt. Just wanted to see him damage his vehicle.

I’m finally of the opinion that if you aren’t willing to obey the traffic laws and can’t keep up with traffic bicyclists should not be allowed on the road.

Some people just don’t understand. Cyclists are doing their part to save the planet from Global Warming, so we should reward them by allowing them to violate each and every traffic law with impunity. /sarc

When being an ass on the road, while riding a bike, is obviously a capital offense...

The bicycle season is starting up here. I have no problem with those who show respect and ride single file near the curb but those who cruise three abreast blocking the entire lane and ride at 10 mph in a 45 zone are something else.
I’m seldom in a hurry and try to cut them slack. Sometimes I’ll lightly tap the horn, hoping they’ll move to the side in single file. Sometimes they do, others will flip me the bird. I’ve never given in to road rage.
