Why do girls have a right to genital integrity, but not boys?
The Libertarian Republic ^ | May 26, 2015 | Austin Petersen

The mother of a four-year-old son, Heather Hironimus, tearfully signed an order allowing for the circumcision of her boy, so that she could be released from prison. The event has stirred a national debate about the necessity of circumcision, and the question of whether all children should be allowed the right to bodily integrity.

Hironimus was imprisoned after she fled with her son, attempting to avoid the fulfillment of an agreement with the boy’s father that would see him circumcised. She’s now taken center stage on the issue, with anti-circumcision activists rallying to her cause, raising $50,000 in legal bills to defend her son, Chase Hironimus. The father wishes to circumcise the boy so that he looks like him.

See the link in my post #38. Dr. Sears references the AAP as well, but gives a little more info. Specifically regarding UTI; the risk is only higher for the first few years of life. He also says that the link to cancer was found not to be there.

I'm snipped, but I see no reason for the procedure in a modern society which practices good hygiene.

The argument that it carries some compelling health benefit is ludicrous. As if a man or boy can't wash himself.

If I had a son, I wouldn't have him circumcised. He, a Gentile, would remain as God made him.

If people want to cling to that tradition, then fine, but I honestly don't see why the pro-circumcision crowd is so dogmatic about it.

However, in this case, I believe the wishes of the father are relevant, and should probably govern the decision.

I’m not feeling much sympathy, here. She did enter into the agreement with her husband.

And for those who equate circumcision with female genital mutilation, the male equivalent of the latter would be something like lopping the entire head off the penis, then sewing the hole shut, only allowing a small hole for urination.

Circumcision is in Genesis - a commandment of God to the Jewish people. NO such commandment for girls. Also it is not mutilation of a boy’s genitals, as it is with a girl.

Abraham was born, supposedly, sometime around 2000 BC.

At that point in time, there is good archaeological evidence various Arabian and North African tribes had been practicing circumcision for something around 4000 years, the Egyptians probably for over 1000 years.

The Australian aborigines for around 8000 years, though obviously not in contact with the patriarchs.

IOW, it was not a new or unique practice when the Hebrews picked it up. While it may have set the Hebrews apart from many of their neighbors, they shared it with many others. I don’t think the Bible says anywhere that nobody else practiced it, I think you’re reading that into the text. If I’m wrong on that, I’m certainly willing to be corrected.

“Herodotus (485-420 BCE) observes and deplores circumcision among the Colchians, Ethiopians, Phoenicians, Syrians, and Macrones, as well as the Egyptian priestly caste.”

Herodotus was of course 1500 years or so after Abraham, but the widespread nature of the procedure is interesting.

AAP says a lot of things for political positions. AAP wants doctors to interview small children alone. They want doctors to ask kids if the family has guns in the house.
The lowered STD risk is well documented. And you might like to know that the main benefit is that it becomes harder for men to spread disease to women.

You are aware Ansell is probably the most anti Romney poster on this board. Why not address what the poster is saying or better still ping the poster when talking about someone.

This is strictly a RELIGIOUS court matter. She agreed in writing to surrender this issue to the father. The father for his own religious issues wanted this done and made it part of the divorce settlement.

If this was such a big issue she should not have agreed.

The judge did not care. Only that there was a signed order.

Sorry, but cutting off a portion of the natural body is by definition mutilation.

You may consider it laudable mutilation or required by God, but it’s still mutilation.

I don’t agree with every policy that AAP recommends, but that doesn’t mean everything they recommend is wrong.

As you said: Female circumcision has no medical purpose or benefit whatsoever.

Circumcision does. How much benefit is something that can be debated, but it does have some.

"Your D-I-L didn't really think this through, did she?">

You are correct. She didn't think any of it through. The marriage and all.

It was my daughter and she married into a different culture and he didn't believe in circumcision as he was not circumcised.

It is best to have it done at birth.
Yes... just like God commands

..............................................................................

The law was circumcise a boy child 8 days after birth. Christians are not under the old law, we have a new covenant through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul had a whole lot to say about circumcision, explaining why it was no longer necessary.

If we were still under Mosiac law, I suspect we’d have to build battlements on our roof tops, to prevent any guests from falling off our roofs. That’s a law too.

If you’re Jewish, you are still under the law.

Are you kidding me? Olympia Snowe, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Chris Cristie, Susan Collins, and pretty much every one of them currently voting with the Democrats.

All of the Rino establishment types are pretty much Libertarians. Not overtly, but by their voting records and policies it is apparent.

You’ve just proven you have no idea what libertarians stand for. Snowe? Christie? Graham? This is simply too wrong to discuss. Look up the term “libertarian”; gun rights are central. None of the ones you offered as examples are remotely libertarian.
