Depression is no longer the No. 1 mental-health concern among college students

Anxiety has now surpassed depression as the most common mental-health diagnosis among college students, according to The New York Times.

A recent study of more than 100,000 students by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State found that more than half of students seeking help at campus clinics report anxiety as an issue, and nearly one in six college students has been treated for anxiety in the past year, according to the American College Health Association.

Mental-health counselors on campus attribute numerous factors to this rise, namely academic pressure from a much earlier age and compulsive social-media interaction. And more interesting, counselors say today's students don't have the coping mechanisms necessary to deal with stress that previous generations possessed.

"They can't tolerate discomfort or having to struggle," Dan Jones, director of counseling and psychological services at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, told The Times. "A primary symptom is worrying, and they don't have the ability to soothe themselves."

How much does PC and the need to watch everything you say lest you'll be accused of racism, sexism or hate speech contribute to this anxiety?
Not to mention the new, bewildering and constantly changing codes of conduct the Libs keep inventing.
It makes me anxious just reading about what goes on, and I don't even have to live in it.

I would a lot of this to cognitive dissonance. They want to be part of the crowd but to do so they have to profess belief in a ton of things their heart tells them just isn’t true. They want to be true to their convictions but don’t want to suffer the social ostracism which goes along with that. So, they just shut up and pretend and the conflict ends up coming out as anxiety and depression.

Discomfort and struggle.....isn’t that description of life?? Are they lowering depression and anxiety thresholds so much that everyone has these disorders? Are they coddling the millenials so that ANY discomfort is a bad thing (a disorder) and that you need counciling and medication to cope with it?

There is an “anxiety” medical condition. But it is not nearly as prevalent as the number of people claiming to have “anxiety.” A huge number of people claim to have it as a way to excuse themselves when they don’t want to deal with the rough edges of life.

I gues this is why they need “safe spaces” to be protected frThey appear to find comfort in agreeing with everyone else at every step of the way on their cell phone.

Depression is what you get when you see who’s sitting in the White House. Anxiety is what you get when you realize that you’re going to be the one to pay for it.

Whaaaaa, I need a safe room because my parents gave me everything from the moon and beyond and my coach handed everyone a participant ribbon so no one felt like a loser and my HS teacher passed me knowing all of us sitting at big round tables cheated instead of making us keep our eyes on our own papers while sitting at separate desks but more upsetting is I think someone might have looked at me in an offensive manner on the way to my Women’s and Gender Studies class with Prof. Caitlyn.

I’m guessing before too long we’ll see the ADA leveraged to mandate things like safe spaces and trigger warnings. And further restrictions on what professors and fellow students can say in academic environments.

I’m also guessing that a lot of students who seek therapy for anxiety (or depression, for that matter) are going to be extremely surprised when, years down the road, that aspect of their medical history convieniently pops up when they go to buy a firearm. Especially if the new proposed Obama anti-gun regs go into and stay in effect.

Anxiety has now surpassed depression as the most common mental-health diagnosis among college students,

Is there a big difference? Don't they have the same root?

I’m so old I remember when depression in college was the result of goofing off and getting bad grades.

I’m so old I remember feeling anxious before tests and big papers.

I’m so old I remember fear being a major motivator in school and at work.

I’m so old I grew up without school programs intended to boost my self esteem.

I’m so old I actually took math, physics, chemistry and biology courses in college.

I miss Faber College...

Good thing we aren’t relying on this generation to blaze trails westward though the plains or colonize new uncharted frontiers; we’d be friggin doomed.

What a bunch of crybabies.

The Obama Depression is OVER!

It’s been replaced by anxiety since jobs are not to be found, chaos reigns in the streets, and we are no longer the leader of the free world.

I’ve had anxiety and panic attacks. It’s all so miserable. I recently found out I have Graves’ disease. It’s most likely the culprit, I am more calm now that I am on anti thyroid mess than I have been in years. When I went in thinking I was dying of a heart attack 10 years ago, I wish they would have tested my thyroid. I was a prime candidate for thyroid issues-I had four babies in five years, no multiples.

I spent a decade feeling like a failure that couldn’t handle life stresses very well. Now I feel “normal “ again. The thyroid affects every cell in your body, I wonder if taking the pill can affect it? Many young woman take the pill. I’ve never taken it, just have had nine pregnancies, with six surviving children.

I’d be anxious of I was a kid all alone and I had to be careful about every dang little thing I said and did. In fear of micro-agressing anyone and everyone.
