Its been a hunert years since I red that sentence in the April 1984 issue of National Geographic. Well 31 at least.
Today I walked into a facility for the umpteenth time. This time, while waiting, I walked over to a half filled book case and incredibly it held many, many past issue of National Geographic including the April '84 issue.
This issue included coverage of Central California and half way thru it they start talking about Santa Barbara. It starts by "If you don't live in Santa Barbara it must be because of a misdeed committed in a prior life". That is a close approximation.
I lived there 72 thru 85 and have written here before about how beautiful it is. I never forgot that lead in and it was hoot to read it again.
I’ve been to Santa Barbara a few times and it seems like quite a lovely place. Always short visits, though, so I don’t have a feel for what it would be like to live there full time. But the surfing is very nice and the weather is ideal.
And my sister did gator wrestling a little south of there in the Ojai area. She said it was an awesome experience. I was (and still am) jealous.
Never been to the ocean but I do have some Great Lakes.
I lived in Santa Barbara from the mid-1970’s through 1989, and for a year from 1991 through 1992.
Erm, gator wrestling?
And were you jealous of the wrestling or the Santa Barbara geography?
Is hunert a word?
Ojai is a pretty inland area, but it’s in Ventura County.
Pronounced: Ooh Hi.
The late Larry Hagman moved his family out of Malibu and on to a large spread in Ojai some years ago.
Yup...
Lived in Goleta first then moved into Mission Canyon area. On Cheltenham. Was a flight instructor for Santa Barbara Avaition and the UCSB flying club in my extra time. Those were the days.
Santa Barbara real estate cost is out of sight. Very liberal area as well. Had a job offer from Raytheon up in Goleta decades ago but decided I could not afford a decent house.
My two favorite hotels to stay at are the Fess Parker Inn and Bacara...
Real estate prices within 20 miles of the coast from San Diego to San Fran are staggering beyond belief.
Which is why the Inland Empire is filling up, with a mountain range dividing it from Orange County. It’s as though the westward migration finally rebounded eastward from the Pacific. We paid $70k for a brand-new 3BR/2BA home in a nice area in ‘88.
Good assessment of the IE. Lived here in the Pass area for nearly 40 years. The area has changed.
Don't I know. Lived in that belt for almost 40 years. Ended up selling out and having enough equity to eventually retire in Hawaii after working a few years after the cash out.
No salt, no sharks, no problem.
In Texas it is
Yes, now leave me alone while I eat my sammich.
