Parents Charged with 'Neglect' After 11-Year-Old Plays in Yard for 90 Minutes
Fox News ^ | 6/14/2015

Two Florida parents were hit with felony neglect charges after their 11-year-old son was reportedly playing alone in the backyard for an hour and a half.

According to his mother, the boy arrived home before his parents and was locked out of the house, so he shot some hoops in the yard until they arrived.

A neighbor saw the child outside alone and called the local police. When his mother and father arrived home, they were met by a police officer, who arrested them for child negligence.

Robert Bianchi and Steve Raiser joined Clayton Morris on "Fox and Friends Weekend" to debate whether these charges are excessive.

"He didn't know where his parents were. He was locked out of his house. And he didn't have access to emergency services, shelter, food, things like that," Bianchi said.

Raiser countered that there was no danger from the neglect and felony charges may actually cause more damage in this case.

Of course the “neighbor” is a Left Wing Nutcase who should be “educated” by the other neighbors through constant dead end phone calls, garbage at the front door, rotten eggs thrown on the side of the house, etc.

The story was covered in detail on the Dennis Prager Show this past week. According to Dennis, there was a utility shed to provide shelter, two sinks inside and a garden hose for water, and a yard to pee in if needed. The kid shot hoops while he waited for the parents.

My Dad bought a run down old farm at a tax auction when I was 12 and my kid brother was 11. It was about 100 miles away. We would get projects started on the weekend, then he would leave us as he drove home on Sunday night to return the following Friday night.

If we had the fencing, rock clearing and other chore list completed or nearly completed, he'd sometimes take us into the nearby town for ice cream and shopping and/or to the lake for swimming on the following Saturday. If not, we worked until it was done. Our youngest brother was 6 at the time.

Two or three years later, he joined us for the summer work detail. Mother would then sometimes join us for weeks she didn't have other work scheduled, about 50% of the time.

By the time we were in college, the improvements we had made over the years we worked that farm enabled Dad to sell it for a sizable profit to ensure we took on minimum loan debt.

The nosey neighbor should be put in the public stocks with about 6 bushels of rotten tomatoes nearby</p>

We have some nosey neighbors as well. One moved away... if I don't put my car in the garage she would call me up to ask if something was “wrong”. One time she smeared a giant mushy poop that looked like it came from a Great Dane on our porch because she thought that it came from our miniature wienerdog that only left the house when we were walking it on a leash. She is the one who had big dogs that she let roam free.

The other neighbors are just plain evil and killed our little wiener dog with a rock. Every tree he has ever asked me to take down for some nonsensical reason has died within a couple months. We live in an upscale neighborhood, but had much better neighbors in the working class area we lived in before.

The neighbors we had growing up would never have called the police if they saw any of us kids playing outside alone. They would have offered us some type of treat or refreshments if they were worried about us. Neighbors calling the police over nothing is a definite sign that our society is going down hill quickly.

Okay I see my comments were covered in the article. I don’t think the fact that both sons were taken away from their parents for a month and both parents are facing felony charges are. Can you imagine the legal fees they’ll owe when this is done?

Felony?
If this is to be the case, then the government must publish clear laws. The laws must state the length of time for each age that constitutes felony neglect.
For example
Age 11, 45 minutes
Age 12, 75 minutes
Age 13, 120 minutes

Does that mean that letting a 13 year old walk down to the 7/11 will get you thrown in jail? How about walking to a neighbor’s house? And how long a walk constitutes a crime?

The end goal is taking control of children’s minds and actions, while leaving financial responsiblity in the hands of the parents.

“”He didn’t know where his parents were. He was locked out of his house. And he didn’t have access to emergency services, shelter, food, things like that,” Bianchi said.”

So this Good neighbor” would not have allowed the boy to use their phone to call 911 if needed? Or use their bathroom, or give him a drink of water? Would they let him starve, like that would happen in 90 minutes? Some neighbor huh. I am shocked that the cops even took this call seriously.

The kid should have been provided a key for the house.

While nothing has been said in other posts on this story, I have met few kids that have not forgotten items on the occasion. However, this story has been making the rounds and on another post it is stated that the parents were delayed by a traffic accident from getting home promptly.

What is not stated in THIS story is that this unnamed Florida location took possession of not only this 11yo, but his 4yo brother as well, for a month in foster care. It was only after considerable effort and cost that the locality released these children back to the parents, whom I am sure are now front-and-center for visits from Florida DCF (Dept.Children&Families.)

My query on this story is what is the responsibility of the police and the child-protection authorities in this case. What was the leeway provided in their rules to avoid a 1 month separation of this family for what appears to be a strong over-reaction. We have a society torn between cases of children being horribly abused and scenarios like this.

My parents used to leave me at home all weekend while they went gambling, drinking, and smoking meth.

But that was okay because they were Democrats. :-/

Just a guess-

Neighbor hears kids playing basketball in the yard next door. Pissed about the noise. Goes to ask them to be quiet. No parents. Kids play for another hour or so. Pissed off neighbor calls police and says kids are unsupervised.

Or something.

remember when your neighbors would of just watch the kid for you if they were concerned.. instead of reporting you?

The reason my parents could let us have free run of the neighborhood (roughly 1 mile in either direction) was that nearly everybody knew them, and would have dropped a dime to call and tell them if any of their kids were causing trouble.

What’s worse... kid playing in yard OR kid roaming the streets of Baltimore? Why don’t they go after those parents?

OK, so talk to the parents, and then it’s done. “Sorry for wasting your time officer.”
This is so pathetic.

The neighbor could go on a little boat ride.

This country has lost it's way.

I just got back from Italy. You see kids being kids. ALL OVER THE PLACE. My last night there I had dinner in a small square--at the start of dinner about 6 kids were playing some game with a ball. Through the course of two hours about 15 different kids came and went. Not a parent or adult in sight. One adult came along with her dog and (the horrors, brace yourself here) let the dog off the leash and allowed the dog into the game.

I commented at the time, you could never do that in the states because, god forbid the dog nipped someone, you'd have Finklemyer, Levine and Shumaker up your butt so fast your head would spin.

Hell, you wouldn't be able to do any of it.

But, sure, raise a 13 year old crack selling gang banger rampaging through the streets and no one here will bother with ya.

Thank you for pointing this out. I think the big story here is what an a..hole the neighbor is. They called police for something that they could have looked into themselves.

I have a friend who at the age of 14 went for a bike ride with his 16 year old brother and a 16 year old friend. It wasn’t just a bike ride, it was an 8 week circumnavigation of the State or Michigan.
