And after 30 Days of Lost Identity Due to Theft, your bank notifies you that your credit is shot for the next 7 years.

People who own Macs get their identities stolen too.

Do you have anything to contribute to the thread that might result in the OP actually getting his data restored?

If you have a process that has frozen and keeps loading into memory after a reboot, do a ctrl-shift-esc and then find the exe for it in the process tab and kill it. Then uninstall the app from the control panel if you can. However it may be hard to identify the correct exe file. Often (but not always) it is the one that is taking up most of your cpu time.

Those are old percentages.....

There are more apple OS computers out there, but the point really is that the most popular OS is the most likely to be targeted..

It just is what it is.

Identity theft is really more of a function of data that other entities have because you gave it to them and then they were hacked.

It really has little to do with your personal PC.

YES!
BUY AN APPLY, and QUIT RUNNING WINDOWS!
You'll SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN, and BE MUCH HAPPIER.
It only took me 30 YEARS before I finally listened to my military friends and did it, to learn that.

A lot of my military retired, and active duty friends, would dispute that opinion.

On another computer download and burn Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 and boot the computer with it and see if it can fix the problem

Wrong. This is a nonsense stat that only reflects the percentage of these machines that exist. A PC running windows with up to date antivirus software will be safer than an apple system with an overconfident owner.

How long will it take you to figure out that everybody else is not you, what they use a computer for is not necessarily what you use a computer for, and that running out and buying an Apple is not going to get him one bit closer to getting the data on that backup restored?

Did you checkmark the box that asks if you want earlier restore dates?

Also, you may have the ‘option’ set to only save so many previous restores. If you do, you may be out of luck.

==

I occasionally create a backup image of my OS partition, especially. I do it before and after making major updates. Backup Images have saved me many times.

I like Macrium Reflect (free home use edition).

http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

I had to reimage last week when I was updating my browser and the Adobe flash stuff. Something locked up a file. Everything would reboot fine, even show an internet connection, but would not connect to the internet. It was some extraneous file that somehow got deleted. After the reimaging, it worked and I was able to re-update the browser and flash.

Just a guess Tom Guy, but I think he downloaded a trial version or full version of PC Keeper..Then tried to uninstall it and the uninstall failed for some reason.

PC Keeper had taken over the restore functions and now it all screwed...

The only option I see is to try to reinstall PC Keeper then use it to restore the system..

Failing that...reinstall the OS and lesson learned..

And if he canNOT get his data back, if it's lost FOREVER, then he'll have to start all over.
WINDOWS is terribly expensive to keep up to date, and even more expensive to keep virus free.
It's damn near IMPOSSIBLE !

My friend, I do know something about the data theft that occurred last year.

It was espionage, not a hack.

The Chinese obtained the login credentials of a government employee with total access...

They could have gotten those creds in a variety of different ways, from a lost or stolen laptop to a key logger or Chinese controlled wi/fi is some hotel.

By paying others to get the viruses out of their PC several time, and that's not even counting the "orders to move overseas" problems.
It doesn't take long to realize that cheaper WINDOWS is CHEAPER, and not worth what you paid for it.
STOP THE NONSENSE and BUY AN APPLE.
You'll be MUCH HAPPIER !

There is a program I found and it will not let me delete it. It says it is preparing to delete it but it just goes on and on and on!!

Reboot.

Download GeekUninstaller. It is free and does not have to be installed. Just run the .exe file. When it lists your programs, select the one you want to delete, right click and select 'force uninstall' from the list. It may take a few moments.
