Scientist claims immortality within reach

A visiting American research scientist says he is close to discovering a 'cure' for ageing, that he could have a drug ready for testing by the end of next year.

Molecular Biologist Dr Bill Andrews told TV ONE's SUNDAY programme that humans shouldn't have to suffer from the ravages of ageing. He says that ageing is a disease that should, and could be cured.

His research centres around Telomeres - small caps at the end of our chromosomes that become shorter every time our cells divide.

When they become critically short, we age and eventually die.

Dr Andrews believes that he can find a small molecule that will trigger the production of Telomerase in the body, which will lengthen the Telomeres and stop, or even reverse the ageing process. If he's successful, he says we could all end up looking and feeling 24 years old again.

Amen brother, I’m with you. God has a place for us far better. Why would I want to live forever among this squalor that is our world today.

Also, they may try to do as they like, but God’s plans will not change.

Rev 9:6

And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Another thing they don’t realize or care to realize is even if someone could live hundreds of years, they would be completely blind and deaf. The eyes and ears are only made to last 100 odd years. That’s why when we see people with advanced ages like 105 they are almost always entirely blind and deaf. All that damage from sound and light adds up, the cilia in the ears does not get replaced much like losing an arm, it does not grow back, nor does parts of the eye like the lens when it degrades from 100 years of light and use. I’m 52 and already I’m partially deaf in my left ear with severe tinnitus and I’m so nearsighted that anything more than a foot from me is a complete blur without glasses. I don’t even want to think what I would be like in another 52 years if I lived.

I remember that also. They seemed to be on the right track, but I wondered about the ethics involved. Who decides who gets this? Costs?
The left is already screaming about overpopulation, will they ever let it see the light of day?
If this works the only way to die is what, destruction of the body (gunshot, knife, explosion)?
Lots of questions to go with this discovery.

Not quite that simple, most cancer cells already express telomerase, so unnaturally increasing it could very well increase one's chance of getting cancer.

He is completely wrong and not worthy to be called a scientist. It is not a disease. It is a natural process, just as growth and development are.

If he means delay the aging process, ok, but that isn’t what he said.

On the plus side the cure won’t work on liberals and progressives.

Telomeres are a crucial factor in cell death. Anything that lengthens them does increase the life of the organism.

Certain foods and supplements are known to help maintain and increase their lengths. There are currently supplements out there that have been shown to increase telomere length.

All we need is a liquid lunch, a particle accelerator and some rubber bands. Those of us who don’t become dead, very silly looking, or both, will be able to travel through the universe insulting every living creature individually, in person, and here’s the kicker, in alphabetical order.

There's no putting the genie back in the bottle now. If people can get their hands on this stuff, they're going to do so, no matter what their politics are.

Someone upthread posted a link to a product that's ridiculously inexpensive, though I can't vouch for it.

When I said the products were "expensive", I was speaking from a five year old reference point, and in reference to the only product of its kind that I knew of. My income's a lot better than it was back then, but still, I believe the cost per daily dose would still give most people sticker shock.

I’d say sticker shock.

We’ve got cancer drugs out there that MIGHT save your life for few years, that go for $10,000 + a dose.
