Man Is Killed by Alligator in Texas While Swimming, Despite Warnings From Local Officials Not to

Orange County Police were called to Burkart’s Marina near the Louisiana state line early Friday morning....

Orange County Justice of the Peace Rodney Price told CNN affiliate KFDM that Woodward ignored verbal warnings and a posted “No Swimming Alligators” sign and seemed to mock the deadly creatures before going in the water.

“He removed his shirt, removed his billfold … someone shouted a warning and he said ‘blank the alligators’ and jumped into the water and almost immediately yelled for help,” Price said.

The “No Swimming Alligators” sign was posted this week after a 10-foot alligator was spotted in the bayou waters.

Witness heard ‘An alligator’s got him’

“Please do not go swimming, there’s a bigger alligator out here. Just please stay out of the water,” witness and marina employee Michelle Wright said she told Woodward.

Looking at his picture I can't say I'm surprise.

At least he left his wallet on shore, so they know who he is. Er, was.

I have (yet another) dumb question:

Are they a protected species? Can’t understand why they weren’t eradicated when civilization arrived.

Obviously the stupid alligators didn’t even bother to read the sign.

Saw a show years ago on alligators and crocs.

Some research professor (in FL) would go swimming with alligators armed with only a wooden dowel, 14, maybe 18" long at best, to push off any that actively came up to him.

Probably the inspiration for the Oliver Platt character.

Where in Texas do you live? I just read that gators might be as far west as Waco. That’s where my brother lives. They said there might be gators in Lake Waco where I went on a boat one time. Didn’t see any gators though.

You can say ‘blank the alligators’ if you go in with a mob of people but if you go in alone (or wander too far from the mob) you are just feeding the alligators.

It’s when you got flying alligators you’re in deep kim-chee.

Was that racist?

Late night swim, how much you want to bet alcohol was involved. Gator grabbed him, rolled, then took him to the bottom to drown. They say it was 11 foot - skinny guy never had a chance against 800+ lbs.

Feel bad for the girls he was with...must be terrifying

Alligators used to be protected and on the endangered species list. Look what happened with that idea!
