I’m waiting for my first “non-official” ink from Amazon as I type this. Two full kits (normally about $75 each) for $12. Reviews were ridiculously positive.
We’ll see how it goes.
These printers are very slow - 13ppm black and only 7 for color. Even the highest quality business version is only 20ppm. I can get an HP that goes 42ppm.
Our color laser recently died so I have been looking at printers for our home office with an open mind. The ink jet technology has changed in recent years, so you can get inkjets that are as fast as lasers. However, the ink is as expensive as laser for these, so it has to come down to quality and speed.
Store employees have told me that the quality of printers in general has gone down in recent years - that I should count on buying a new printer every couple of years! A look through Amazon’s reviews as well as different store reviews makes me wonder if there are any that are both trouble free and cost effective.
Because I am “Bookwoman” I frequently have to print out long manuscripts, many of them with color involved. While sometimes draft mode is fine, often I need things to be very high quality. I need a fast workhorse that won’t give me a lot of trouble. I am willing to pay up to $1000 for the printer if it is the right one. It has to be new enough to have Windows 10 drivers. I don’t need it to have all-in-one capability.
Any suggestions?
I was so excited when I saw this post - until I saw how slow the printer was.

When I needed an upgrade for printing, I jumped on the (older) version of this. For about $350 I got the printer, a full duplexer and a full set of ink.
It is wireless and all my kids have come over to print off their phones and iPads.
I home office and now print most of my promotional materials and monthly slicks at home. I used over 2000 pages to complete the DIR contract for the State of Texas, and the speed was invaluable for me when I had to reprint a section. I also burst print my slicks for trade shows and dealer trainings.
The best part? While I bought my printer directly from HP on special, I now buy my ink from Costco. I suspect that you could also get the printer there.
The cartridges are big - normally lasting me a couple of months.
And it will print in B&W even if a color cartridge is out.
Our twelve year old workhorse HP 4100 laserjet just started to crap out on use after giving us no problems for all that time. Out accountant suggested getting what she was using day-in-day-out: an HP 3015 networked Laserjet that looks just like our 4100. I suspect it's built on the same internal engine as the 4100 which is all metal chassis and, like I said, worked great for 12 years or so. I found a refurbished one for $279 plus $49 shipping on Amazon. The printer with a second 500 sheet drawer is $599 new with free shipping with Amazon prime. We shall see if it is as well built as the 4100.
It will be fast enough for our purposes. This is a secondary printer for our office. We have a Kyocera copy/printer/scanner we lease for the heavy duty printing of monthly statements. It's capable of duplex printing. . . but it was a $6000 printer that stands 40" tall with its cabinet and auto feeds.
Great! I have been looking at these OfficeJet Pro X printers, so it is good to hear that they work well. Thank you for the feedback. I’ll start looking for a deal.
Thanks for your response, but I am printing book drafts, not photo prints. I will keep Sam’s in mind when I need photo prints. Good thought!
The 3015 is monochrome and I need color. I am using a workhorse Brother monochrome for my things that don’t need color. Will keep these in mind when that printer goes if I need another monochrome. Thanks!
Good pont.
