A sweet moment with Vin Scully at his news conference Saturday to discuss returning to broadcast the Dodgers next year, suddenly took a dramatic turn to unwanted melancholy.
It was a turn everyone knew would come one day. But still, hearing it from Scully took the air out of the room:

My cousin died suddenly a couple of weeks ago. He was in his 50s. He was a longtime season ticket holder and a YUGE Dodgers fan. He made many trips to historic fields a year to see away games.
At his funeral it was said that, well, he never had to experience a Dodgers game without Vin Scully in his entire life.
I’m not a baseball fan but I’ve remembered Vin my whole life as well. When I was a child I thought his name was Vince Gully. Lol.
Vin Scully is one of the great broadcasters with great longevity almost in a league of his own, but certainly in the long-career league like George Putnam (74 years in broadcasting).
Vin Scully was broadcasting on the West Coast by the time I was born. I discovered him because CBS used him a network daytime host in the early 70’s. At first I didn’t even realize he was a sportscaster.
AH not surprise ES he is up there
I remember LSMFT. Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco.
Scully will be very much missed when he finally calls it a day.
Wonder if any of the Dodgers will want to walk to the plate to a recording of his voice - a la Derek Jeter ?
Difficult to follow the team since the restrictive broadcasting.
Oh no. Really? I thought he was eternal.
