Who Was the Most Appealing Person in the GOP Debate?
News Machete ^ | 9/17/2015 | News Machete

I'll leave coverage of the substance of the GOP debate to others. I want to talk about the style of the participants--who was the best, most appealing speaker?

Chris Christie spoke too quickly, making himself appear nervous. Perhaps he was nervous, because he was on the verge of being eliminated from the grownups debate.

John Kasich has no eyebrows and his face looks partially melted, making himself look like a space alien. He spoke a lot but he didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Carly Fiorina was forceful and articulate. She also looked stern and had this sour look on her face, like a constantly angry schoolmarm. She almost never smiled or had any warmth in her voice.

Ben Carson reminded me of blind David Patterson, the former Governor of New York who was very soft spoken. He talked about important things, but how can you speak with passion about the dangers of a nuclear Iran when you talk in such a soft tone?

Donald Trump was amusing as always and seemed like a character actor. Not exactly Presidential, more like Peter Falk from Columbo.

Ted Cruz was the best. He looked the camera right in the eye, and spoke with a clear, firm voice that had a sense of urgency.

Rand Paul was not great or terrible, but seemed to whine when he talked about drugs.

Scott Walker wasn't bad but he actually spoke the least in the debate. He has this weird way of staring into the camera with one eye but the other is a little off center making it look like he has a glass eye (which he doesn't.)

They showed Mike Huckabee often from a sideview and it wasn't flattering. He looks severely overweight but he did speak with passion. Marco Rubio spoke with a sense of urgency about foreign policy but there also seemed to be a note of desperation in his presentation.

Jeb Bush was definitely higher energy, but he had this weird habit of moving his head when he talked. As he talked at length I saw his head move left and right, right and left, and left and right like windshield wipers. I suppose he was trying to look at all the audience, but when the most important audience was behind a camera his movements seemed weird.

Overall Ted Cruz was the best. Carly had forceful moments but as I said she was not very likeable. Marco and even Jeb had moments too.

While perhaps somewhat helpful (you see the candidates with each other and how they react or not with each other) this is the wrong format to really find out what the candidates think and will do - with specifics.

A real debate formate would throw out a problem or policy and then let the candidates talk about how they would address or deal with the issue. Perhaps have a time for follow-up - more like the first Obama/Romney debate (and “yes” I know there were only two people in that debate).

I am so hoping Cruz gets a chance to shine in the months ahead!

Give Carson cabinet position.

But the kind Dr. Carson is not known for his executive ability. He's smart, alright, but department head...?

Not sure. VA Administrator, Surgeon General, an Ambassadorship?

The best camera performances were huckabee then christe then rubio. But trump wins every debate as long as it is a cage match of everyone against trump.

At best, Fiorina is worthy of a Toastmasters honor for her ability to speak.

However...she's no conservative and the office of the POTUS is not HP...we can't afford to elect another mistake for this office based on her record:

“Every time Cruz answered Kaisch’s stupid questions, he (Kaisch) shifted around a ton and looked nervous. It was quite entertaining.”

Kaisch looked angry, agitated, nervous and pissed off the entire time, and not in a good way. It actually was really weird.

You know I like Cruz but, I found Crispy to be quite fiery entertaining and I wish Ted would catch some of that New Jewesy madness.

>> Oh, and Yeb and Kasich will be gone by Halloween.

Your lips to GOD’s ear. Plus Rand Paul, Gilmore and all four of the losers at the kiddie table.

That still leaves EIGHT. Good night nurse! Too many.

Fiorina is awful by toastmaster standards. She is smart and quick on her feet, but otherwise She has no humor is pushy and a self promoter. Her answer on the 14th ammendment was intellectually dishonest and even her great speech on babies came short of answering if she would shut down the govt.

I hate to say this, but Huckabee’s pointing out the duplicitous misapplication of “accommodation” was spot on. This issue should be front and center, because it centers on morality, the foundation of ALL issues.

Surgeon General.

If Joyce Elders could get her hand around the job :-) then certainly Ben Carson can.

To me the interesting thing will be the forthcoming polls taken in the first week or so
after the debate. They will give some indication how the public at large perceived the
performaces of each candidate. Now whether that percetion was from actually watching or
taking some other persons view of the debate will impact that perception.

Carly is a paper tiger. To me she has a fatal flaw, she has Obama’s fecal touch. Everything she touches turn’s to $hit.

Who cares what someone looks like? An attractive executioner does the same job as an ugly one.

They hate Cruz because they fear Cruz. He is a very, very brilliant man and a wonderful speaker and on top of everything else he is Hispanic and there would be mass suicides among Liberals should a Republican Hispanic get on the ticket (which I believe he will as at LEAST VP)

“Ben Carson reminded me of blind David Patterson...”

Thank you for saying that...I’ve been trying to think all day where I saw that face before!

In terms of likeability, both Christie and Huckabee (who are retreads and have a lot of public government experience) turned out to be likeable, but while they both had an occasional good position, neither one of them struck me as presidential material and I would not be inclined to vote for them. I can see why they were good governors, but I think you have to have more than “likeability.”

Fiorina is likeable in the sense that you might like to sit down and talk with her about an issue and you feel you’d be treated with respect - but she wouldn’t be your buddy. She’s definitely an Iron Lady, which is not a bad thing. She has leadership presence but is not offensive or unfeminine (in contrast to Hillary). Remember that Thatcher saved England!

Rubio is likeable but in a way that seems too young. He’s an excellent speaker (I live in Florida and have seen him live) and has good ideas, but he doesn’t come across as strong enough. Strong doesn’t mean crude and abusive, but simply firm and determined. Maybe he’ll grow into it. I thought his immigration answer was very good, btw, because it is a problem that goes way beyond people slipping over the border and has to be dealt with at different levels.

So that’s my “personal likeability” score. There were others I liked for various positions, but they didn’t have a lot of leadership presence or were frankly unlikeable.
