Looking for fellow FReepers opinions about statins. I told doc I do not want a script. However how effective are fish/krill oils? what about cetia?. Of course I understand about diet but I have not started a new diet yet. Go ahead and go to town on this one, please.

yup that seems to be a consistent theme. not just cardio but weight type workouts, Why? Is stressing the muscle important?

Cholestoff works for me...made from pine bark.

Follow the goats...they like pine needles and also crunch into the pine tree bark.

Sorry don’t have the numbers right now but will get them. My wife and I do not eat a lot of processed food. But the food I make at home I know is to fat laden, I’m gonna have to work on that.

I take Simvastatin about 4-5 days a week. I take COQ10 every day and take daily Salmon Oil pills. I do a massive dose of Niacin at night along with Potassium to limit the leg cramps from it.

The Dr prescribed 40mg of statin and I immediately had it cut in half with no discernible effects.

So are you saying pine bark is a part of your diet?

Something I have been taking for 5 years (only candidate suspect is Crestor) has really impacted my memory. I feel just like my uncle described his early stages of alzheimers (since deceased, RIP). After 5 years there has been little change in that aspect, while my health has definitely benefitted. I tried CoQ-10 as a supplement for a couple months, didn’t see any effect but just don’t know. Some of this I am simply getting used to. Write things down, follow a pattern of behavior, make checklists, at least mentally.

I have had serious heart disease since my mid-30s, and a half dozen doctors have insisted treating my blood pressure issues with fish oil, and my chest pains with anti-depressants. For 10 years I walked around on the verge of death with 98% blockage, and finally found a cardiologist who considers both to be “quackery” in his words. IMO his work has kept me alive in spite of my genetics. It has not been cheap nor easy, but it has been effective.

You have to be your ultimate keeper, but my opinion is if you are dealing with your heart, you want a seasoned cardiologist.

I was 50# over weight with borderline bp and high cholesterol with high triglyceride levels. We went in a low carb diet. My bp is way down (average 110/70) everything is is vastly improved. My wife is no longer pre-diabetic.

The fish oil has kept me well for 12 years and off statins. The main line medical literature says it has no benefits. The mainstream sources have said many things about alternative stuff that I have proven in my own self-health practices have proven to be a crock.
I have not had a cold or flu in 9 years- D3 supplements and I've not had a flu shot since 1966.
I take care of my own recurring kidney stones with something my mother-in-law swore by.
I fix kidney infections with colloidal silver. I use it just as one would use prescription antibiotics. It probably works for other bacterial infections also but I have not had the occasion to try.
The eye doctor said I had at best 3 years before I would have to have cataract surgery 11 years ago.- 20 mg Lutein and astaxanthin daily. The halos have reduced somewhat and the then wiggly macular degeneration chart lines are straight now.

Statins are bad. Search is your friend. Try different approaches first.

> Why? Is stressing the muscle important?

Not only does resistance training maintain muscle tone, it maintains bone mass, which becomes much more important as you age.

I am 69. I haven’t run or jogged since 1972 when I got a broken femur and it was set not quite right. I walk at 4mph, though, and do it a lot.

Brisk walking is good, low-impact cardio.

No notable problems after about 10 years on 10mg Lipitor. It moved me from 220, down to 160, consistently. I’m average weight (5’10”, 170, age 58), exercise regularly and don’t eat stupid (most of the time!). I take CoQ10, as said by others, and Fish Oil.
No noticeable side effects, really. I tried going off for ~6 months because I thought it was hurting my running performance, but all that changed was my cholesterol going back up.
I moved to generic, a couple of years ago, without any perceptible difference. Statins are very personal and everyone reacts differently to different versions. There is no universal answer, IMHO.
