Evidence of New World's oldest decapitation found

Domingo C. Salazar-García, an investigator from Max Planck who did the isotopic analysis on the bones, said the evidence points to a more complex explanation than the result of war or a crime.

The final removal of the head, he said, was not the result of cutting but instead of pulling and rotating until detachment was achieved. And there is no evidence that Burial 26, as the remains have been named, was killed.

"The chemical analysis of strontium isotopes done in this study indicates that the decapitated individual was not an outsider to the group," Salazar-García said. "Therefore, it was probably not a defeated enemy but instead a member of the community."

The researchers propose that the decapitation in Lapa do Santo was part of a broader set of mortuary rituals involving the manipulation of the body. The careful arrangement of the hands over the face is compatible with an important public display in the ritual that could have worked to enhance cooperation within a community.

What is this? An attempt to normalize decapitations by saying they happen everywhere?

I don’t see why this should even matter.

“Whaddya mean, dig a bigger hole?”....

The hole? Sometimes it’s getting the lid closed that breaks a sweat.

Right, do what we say or we rip your head off.
It still works today, especially in Mexico.

pulling and rotating

So they unscrewed the head from the body. Which way did they turn it. Lefty loosey or are humans plumbed like gas lines?

the grieving widow complained to the funeral director that the deceased in the other room was wearing her husbands suit and that he never owned a suit like the one she was viewing...
He told her he was sorry and would tend to it.
Two minutes later he told her ALL IS WELL
She thanked him
Later one of the employees asked how was he able to switch two suits so quickly.. The funeral director said, no big deal.... I JUST SWITCHED HEADS..

Well I am pretty sure that they did at some time in history.

The French did not stop using the Guillotine until 1977

But if this man was killed by pulling his head off I would say that is about as brutal a method of execution as I have heard of.

And I must say it would “enhance cooperation within a community” as the article proposes.

The story is poorly written — about as clear as mud. It appears that the man died of natural causes (not crime or war) and as part of the mortuary process, his head (the skeleton) was unscrewed.

Unless someone has a better explanation.
