Re #48:
Baseball probably has more unwritten rules than all the other sports combined. And I can’t deny that it all gets pretty silly.
Toronto was favored in 85, then they ran into 2 buzzsaws called “Orel Herschiser” and “George Brett”, who proceeded to destroy them. But Toronto was a young team back then, with no playoff experience to draw from, and they got intimidated by the pressure.
Different now - Toronto has won 2 World Series titles and has lots of talent. They know what to expect.
Lets hope for a hard, clean series with no controversial calls!
Of course, like a true Cubs fan, I still think they will find a way to choke. But I hope I'm wrong.
You are probably not aware of the recent discovery of what is being called the “Gospel of Yogi”. It is very similar to Matthew but with one huge difference:
“You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, the Cubs will win the World Series and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. ”
Scary close....
I have absolutely no problem with celebrating, bat flipping, etc in the professional game. When the game is played for pay, it is in the realm of entertainment. If the fans love it, then get over it. If the pitcher Byson did not like it, too bad. I personally despise the idiotic beard that Byson sports. Should he shave it off because most people think he looks like an idiot, hell no. Bautista’s bat flip and Byson’s stupid goat roper beard are all part of the entertainment. If any player wants to play by the unwritten rules of the game, then I suggest he take himself down the road to the nearest amateur game. It is the entertainment of the fans that add the zeros to their paychecks.
Mercy! I was having flashbacks to the Oriole-Dodger Series back in about 1965 or 6. I was in Baltimore, and working with recording equipment while listening to the radio cast of one of the games. LA had an outfielder named, I think, "Agee. He committed four errors in one game, and the announcer said, Its a record - a dubious record - for a World Series game. I happened to record that in the background while I was making a loop of magnetic tape which had to be played over and over to analyze the data on other tracks. So I heard that exclamation over and over . . .I was beginning to think last night that that Rangers shortstop was going to break that record in a single inning!
As a (sob!) Phillies fan, I was rooting for Cole Hammels - albeit also for Ben Revere - and the title, Rangers Beat Rangers, struck me as exactly right. It could have said, Rangers Beat Hammels and been just as accurate; the first three batters in the seventh inning should have produced outs - and Hammels was responsible for all three of them as baserunners when he left. He was the losing pitcher - beaten by the Rangers themselves.
My problem with Andrus goes way back, he is a classic case of a guy who gets the big contract and gets lazy, he has regressed every year since signing the contract.

You are correct that George Brett went on a terror in that series but the Royals pitcher that was phenonminal in that whole post-season for KC was Bret Saberhagen. That was 30 years ago and Orel was one of the best back in the day as well so I can see why his name could come up.
I agree, it's going to be a tough series for either side and I hope for the best.
CGato
I missed that!
Serves me right for reading it in the vulgate.
The Dodger dogs aren’t worth it. And the traffic! That’s why no one gets there on time and has to leave early. Plus, you might be maimed of killed in the parking lot.
The only redeeming part of the Dodgers today is Vin Scully.
I would have made it a point to watch it just to see how the Mets' pitchers dealt with scumUtley........
Oh well, scumUtley has a whole 6 months to think about whether to duck or dodge the next time he faces the Dodgers............
My problem with it is 90% of the stuff is invisible unless you’re really paying attention. Most of the bat flips you’re seeing guys get beaned for look like slightly more enthusiastic version of just dropping the thing. And even last night’s flip, yeah he put some energy into it, but it was a potentially (eventually) series winning 3 run homer. And I think the level of picayune the complainers are putting into it just encourages people. If I knew I could throw a pitcher off his game staring at my hit an extra couple of seconds it becomes my duty to my team to stare down that ball, and then him, and a triple flip on the bat, and lots of fist pumps, and dance a jig around the bases. Get the whole other team’s heads out of the game. The players that don’t like it are better served by ignoring it, then only the naturally enthusiastic players will do it, and you age out of that.
I’m wondering if the MLB should maybe write them down. I know we give the NFL a lot of crap for being the No Fun League when they write rules about celebration. But I think most players that have been beaned for bat flipping would contest which league is no fun. If they actually spelled out in the rulebook “this much celebration and no more” it would probably help settle the problem. That’s actually a lot of why the NFL did, fewer temper tantrums and less wasted time.
No one, absolutely no one thought my Astros would be playing in a game 5 of the ALDS this year. Hate to tell you MLB elite teams, but we are only getting better.
An Astros fan, (not rangers), and I thought it was one of the most disgusting displays of playoff unsportmanship I had ever seen.
Good thing Dysdale, Gibson, and Marichal aren't Ranger pitchers next year.
Big difference between joy and celebration, and in your face taunting (like bat flipping). Buatista might not want to crowd the plate at Arlington next summer.
Bat flipping is NOT taunting. It’s celebrating.
This was pretty classless as well.
Holland sure wipes his butt better than he pitches.
