The poem salutes the dedication of a man who, facing almost certain destruction, rises to the occasion to defend his home, his country, his family, and his beliefs.

I don't know where you see the writer "creating" any god, or betraying the highest principles.

And if you understand the history behind the poem, it is even more meaningful.

The term "gods" is meant figuratively, and bespeaks a sacrifice above and beyond Self.
