My wife and I are early 60s retired, not yet on Medicare. The new Obamacare prices are out today and our monthly cost went from $1k/month to $1.9k/month. This is clearly over the 8% of income hardship limit for us so I should not have to pay any tax penalty for not buying Obamacare. I'd like to not completely be without some form of catastrophic coverage. Recently I've been researching short term health insurance. I can get a six month policy with lower deductibles than the Ocare for about $300/month. Am I missing something. Anyone else going this route?
Basically posting to save this thread in my ping s list. My husband is beginning to look around for insurance. He has been out of work & went back to school in August. We will have to pay the what so seems illegal.......penalty at tax time. Because it makes soooooo much sense to tax your hardworking, taxpaying citizens who contribute to their community & are having a tight financial situation & are a burden on no one else. It absolutely makes you boil w/ the injustice of it all.
P.s. love your tagline!
No problemo. Just got an update for Mrs. rktman’s insurance which we still carry through my former employer since she’s not old enough for medicare. New improved cost for 2016——$920/month. Awesome. Only about an $80/mth bump.
In case you missed it post #21 is the answer the solution.
I do not intend to sound insensitive, but if you and your wife were planning on retiring at that early age, why didn’t you plan for insurance.
If you are in a serious accident, the rest of us are paying for you.
Thanks for nothin.
Wait until you get cancer.
My sisters first bill—before chemo and surgery—just the testing: $157,000.
Good luck living out of your car.
Vt Lt,
I did. The first year I retired my annual insurance cost was $1800. Now I’m looking at $22,000. I could afford to pay it too but at some point it makes no sense. I was not planning on being without insurance, just without Obamacare. Don’t loose any sleep over having to foot any of my bills. I can assure you that will never happen. I could probably retire again on what I’ve paid in taxes since I retired.
The medical government industrial complex is mining the assets of the older Americans by looting them through healthcare mandates. Best to get your assets out of your hands
If I get cancer, I die. Life is a mist. I will get no “standard” treatment for cancer.
On the other hand, an aquaintence of ours:

The AMA is a ripoff. The first hint was when they lost the lawsuit with Chiropractors a few decades ago. We’ve been without health care now for almost two years. When we get sick, we use natural cures. It actually works, thanks to the internet.
Back in the day I had what I thought was a broken toe. The doctor took x-rays and said he didn’t know what it was but maybe there was a chip of bone causing irritation. So I go home and hit the internet. Within 5 minutes I self diagnose with gout. Within 10 minutes I find black cherry juice is the cure. I buy some, a day later it’s gone. I’ve since bought, for $25, a six year supply of black cherry pills. Whenever It seems to be coming on, I pop a couple of pills every day and within a day or three it’s gone. Had it in my knee a year ago and the same thing fixed it.
And when we DO see a doctor, our bills are reduced by 50% or more because we are paying out of pocket and they don’t have to deal with the hassle of insurance companies. The whole health insurance industry is the ultimate rip-off. We opt out.
BTW, I have not been to a doctor in over three years. I’m almost 62. I refuse all cancer tests. If I ever get it, I’ll find out the hard way. I have the same health insurance as the Apostle Paul: Jesus. And to live is Christ and to die is gain.

That sounds all well and good.
Until it’s you.
Good luck. You will need more than your share.
But you don’t die easy, nor right away.
You have a crystal ball?
No. Something better. I have about thirty five years of experience in the matter.
As I said, good luck to you.
Your “confidence” will unfortunately make your fall that much harder on you and those you love.
God has made science to prevent exactly what you are relying on him to do for you.
I believe the 8% rule applies to the Bronze plan. If there is Bronze plan in your county that is under 8% of your income, you wouldn't qualify for the hardship..
Evo,
The numbers I quoted were for the cheapest bronze plan. You should see the price of the others.
Wow, your getting slammed. In my part of flyover country a couple your age can get an unsubsidized bronze plan for about $12K a year for 2016..
That is the future. Combined with hospitalitalization insurance. The future is no insurance for ordinary care.
Something will need to be worked out for the chronically ill.
It’s really not that simple. And yet, in a very good way, it is. :-)
