Based on witness accounts, investigators believed the teen — allegedly a documented member of a local street gang — was handling a loaded firearm when he “unintentionally” shot himself, the release stated.

It remained unclear how he obtained the handgun.

As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives said they were still looking to speak with additional people who were at the location when the shooting occurred.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500
