Exclusive: We Test The Armatix iP1, The Not-So-Smart Gun
NRA ^ | 11-12-15 | Guns and Gear

Posted on 11/15/2015 4:31:56 PM PST by smokingfrog

In May 2014, NRA staffers secretly tested the Armatix iP1, the so-called "smart gun" that at the time was causing a furor among both media and gun owners nationwide. What we found was disappointing at best, and alarming at worst.

NRA sent a team of firearm experts to an undisclosed range (at the request of our hosts) to do real-world tests of the iP1. To our knowledge, NRA is the only organization that has actually conducted real-world tests of the iP1 under range conditions.

Guns & Gear Editor and team member Frank Winn penned a review of the iP1 for America's 1st Freedom. However, A1F withheld publication of the test results for fear that an honest review of the poorly functioning Armatix might be misconstrued as opposition to the technology itself. NRA was already being falsely accused of blocking smart gun development, and the expensive, small-caliber Armatix was failing on its own due to fears that sale of the gun would trigger New Jersey's infamous mandate requiring similar technology in all guns.

In truth, NRA has never opposed smart guns, believing the marketplace should decide their future. Rather, NRA opposes government mandates of expensive, unproven technology, and smart guns are a prime example of that.

However, smart guns have been making a comeback in the news lately. On Oct. 22, the Washington Post reported on the recent activity of the iP1's designer, German Ernst Mauch, as he attempted to rehabilitate the iP1's reputation, as well as his own: "It's operating perfectly."

Without pairing, the Armatix i-pee-one functions like any other handgun, capable of being fired by anyone.

Make the legislature have to conduct a field test of any smart guns first. For two years, the legislators’ bodyguards and security people may ONLY have “smart” guns. And the “smart” feature MUST be used and not disabled.

Yes but apparently it cannot get through even a single magazine without a failure. Unacceptable in a self-defense firearm.

Just like today’s smart cars can be hacked, you would be crazy to own this.

In 2 days, the darknet will have a hack and people will start having the weapon just fire whenever and wherever.

Small example: On the show “Scorpions” they have an old 1980s era analog answering machine, since it can’t be hacked.

7 button pushes and 12 seconds (minimum) to access the firearm. With a quart of adrenaline dumped into your system. Tactics instructors worry about fine motor skills and being able to disengage a single safety, and these fools want you to push the correct 7 button sequence, in the dark, with your dog barking and the kids screaming... What an idiotic idea.

Maybe it would sell if they included a kool belt and codpiece.

As glaring as its faults are one has to wonder if it was rushed to market prematurely or built to fail.

Rockford found a way to partially exploit an answering machine in Pastoria Prime Pick. A favorite episode.

He used the playback tone and a tape recorder.

Fails on multiple accounts. Sounds like a pistol liberals should be forced to buy.

I saw the Leslie Stahl piece on 60 Minutes. All I could think about was what a stupid old hag Leslie was.

My father grew up on a government experiment station that had a gun range used by Col. Thompson to first demonstrate to the army his submachine gun with a compensator. Dad, a fresh young fellow, commented to the officers attending that he was surprised that the submachine gun worked without jamming, unlike the 1911 pistol. A general who was there was indignant, so Dad pointed to four or five other officers who had government-issued sidearms with them and suggested they prove him wrong. None of them was able to empty a magazine without a jam or stovepipe. Of course, the 1911 can be “touched up” and loosening it up with wear improves its reliability, but as a personal defense weapon, you can really only count on the first round.

"What an idiotic idea."

To the Left, the idea that you would die while you are fiddling with a gun to defend yourself is poetic justice. You are a White Conservative gun owner. The Left has disposed of 120,000,000 un-belivers in the last century.

Apparently, given that their Democratic Socialist Utopia hasn't happened yet, those hundred million and change isn't enough. If mass extermination isn't successful, perhaps ones and twoes. At least until they can succeed in confiscating all the guns, or turning them off, and they can return to the obliteration of the racist Right.

I think I’d rather not wear a seatbelt in that car so I could be ejected in the event of an accident.

Hmm...$1800 for a gun that has to be cold-booted and doesn’t go “bang” when you want it to? What a deal!
