A woman who refused to leave a hospital when doctors discharged her died after she was forcibly removed by police, authorities said Tuesday.
Barbara Dawson, 57, collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went to seek treatment for breathing difficulties, said Blountstown Police Department chief Mark Mallory. Mallory said an officer had arrested Dawson for disorderly conduct and trespassing.
An autopsy on Dawson has been performed and the results should be released Wednesday, Mallory said. Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials have been called in to investigate, department spokesman Steve Arthur said. He declined to comment further.
Mallory said that the officer who arrested Dawson removed the handcuffs after she collapsed and escorted her back into the hospital.
Hospital officials did not return telephone calls Tuesday night. Ruth Attaway, administrator and CEO of the hospital, was quoted by The Tallahassee Democrat as saying that staff did everything they could to save Dawson.
While doctors initially thought Dawson was stable and should be released, she felt like she was still having breathing issues and wanted to stay, said Tallahassee attorney Daryl Parks, who is representing Dawson's family.
"The most reasonable thing to do is to let her sit there and be able to settle down until she felt well. Instead, she is forcibly removed and put in cuffs," Parks said. "The early facts of this case should cause a great concern for everyone."
The Calhoun-Liberty County chapter of the NAACP held an emergency meeting on Tuesday. Dale R. Landry, who is the regional vice president for the Florida State chapter of the NAACP, met with local leaders and the family.

And since she is black, that’s probably going to mean rioting and looting for them.
As it should. I am appalled, calling the police to have someone removed who has trouble breathing. Don’t care what the circumstances were. They murdered her instead of treating her.
The hospital is not worried about or concerned with law suits. They have scads of lawyers on retainer. They have insurance policies that cover the awards. And when the insurance companies raise their premiums, they just double the increase amount and pass it along to the suckers...er...patients.
I just found more details on this story. Apparently, this woman has had conflicts with this hospital before, and the police were called on her many times.
Perhaps she’s not very polite. But, I know from personal experience that sometimes hospital staff doesn’t like when you speak up or refuse to follow along with everything - even when you do so politely but firmly - and they will punish you for that.
I asked the nurse to remove the morphine drip because I didn’t like it stuck in my arm. An hour later they were readying me to leave. I was supposed to stay another two days. I was fine with that.
back of my hand, not arm.
Death panels strike again- Dems owe Sarah Palin an apology!
There are two things cops are obligated by law to do; investigate crime and preserve order. “Protect and serve”? not so much.
And yes it's hard to explain to my friends and family that the police in America are not supposed to prevent crime or protect you. They are there to respond to reported crimes, to investigate and fill out the official paperwork as officers of the court.
Your personal safety and that of your family and community is your own personal responsibility.
Lots of blurred lines these days.
The "Protect and Serve" logo never indicates who is being protected and served. My guess would be the government, not the citizens.
Bingo.
It’s possible that she was mentally ill. We’re going to know a lot more about this case, no doubt.
Hospitals can charge whatever they want, but their reimbursements are contractually determined. No, hospitals can't "pass it on" to the consumers.
Hospitals have lots of lawyers but almost all of them are tied up in corporate compliance issues as mandated by the State.
Many, if not most, hospitals are self-insured, so, no, they are going to feel the pain with this very acutely. I can assure you of that.
Many health care providers call it quits before their time because they get fed up with the type of nonsense you are spewing out.
Other than those minors details, your post was really right on target.
Ah, the future of Obamacare.
