Anyone else spending Christmas Eve alone? (vanity)

Merry Christmas, fellow Freepers! Once again, it is Christmas Eve and once again, many of us find ourselves, for various reasons, alone. Many of us have circumstances that have led to a solo Christmas Eve. Mine: My marriage fell apart in 2009. Part of my agreement with my ex-wife is that she has our daughter Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and she is with me the rest of Christmas day. Not a perfect solution, but I would rather say “hello” than “goodbye” to my little girl on Christmas. That, alas, means that on the Eve of our most family-oriented of holidays I find myself here. By myself. No big deal. I’m used to it and have found I don’t mind at all. Anyone else out there flying solo this evening?

I’ve been a lone wolf for about 12 years now. I just can’t handle too much companionship, and my family lives a long ways away. So the cats and I chill by the fireplace. Cheers to you!

I don't have a Facebook presence -- thank God! -- so I couldn't watch it.

I remember the film "I Remember Mama" from 1948, directed by George Stevens, where Oscar Homolka played a relative who was dying. The family maintained a deathwatch around his bed. He took one last drink of whiskey and expired. When I first saw it on TV, my father commented that this was normal in families in his day.

Many years ago I realized that quite a few people we know are alone on Christmas Eve so I started doing an open house. I buy tamales and have rice and beans and our house is packed. Everyone eats, drinks, and has a great time.
I had to cancel this year because I have an awful chest cold and just didn’t feel like doing it. Made me feel really bad to cancel.

Granny Sue used to say, “No matter what it is, from the
cradle to the hearse; there’s nothing so bad that it
couldn’t be worse!”

So, we take the cards we are dealt in life and play our
hand as best we can.

We did the big get-together at the inlaws’ over the weekend. Husband worked today, so tonight it’s just us, and it’s peaceful and restful.

Yes,with my best buddy,my wire fox terrier. My Christmas’s growing up,were like a Norman Rockwell painting. They were absolutely wonderful,
and I’m so thankful for that. Now that I’m older, being around people, enjoying a wonderful holiday dinner would be nice, but only nice,it’s not important.
Merry Christmas FReepers!!!

My first Christmas alone was at Fort Lewis in 1971.

I had just arrived from Fort Gordon and was assigned to 1st Signal Group. As it was the day before Christmas and a blizzard was expected, I was sent off to the BOQ and told to check in after the long weekend. I spent Christmas alone, alternately grabbing a bite from a bucket of KFC and drinking a Christmas libation from a bottle of JD. It was pretty bad.

One good note. Six months later, both Group and the 58th Signal Battalion, to which I had been assigned, got new commanding officers. When I told my story to my new battalion CO, he was furious that I had been abandoned and not permitted to participate in the various Christmas functions typical for army officers. He set up a buddy system so that something like this would never happen again under his command.

In the end, it worked out for the best.

I just had leftover pizza and it was quite good.

I got it from a place that has rebuilt from the flood that almost got me. Figured I’d throw some business that way.

‘’...spend some quality time with “A Christmas Story”...’’

Watched “A Christmas Story 2” today and it wasn’t half bad, even without Darren McGavin (Daniel Stern instead) and with a grown-up Ralphie.

Off to turn on Christmas music, work on a quilt, and spend some quiet time.

Merry Christmas, all!!

River Song is returning for the new Christmas special. I’m interesting to see how she plays against Capaldi’s Doctor.

I’m also wondering if we’ll get a glimpse of the next companion.

Matt Smith’s last episode on now. “The Time of the Doctor”

I took a wrong turn at Amazon streaming and turned on It’s a Wonderful Life, instead. Haven’t seen it in a few years. Good choice. Enjoin thoroughly. Merry Christmas!

I am with my son, but not my daughter. My son and I adopted a homeless man and brought him in to stay warm and not feel alone. He made us his favorite Christmas meal for dinner” macaroni and cheese and hot dogs. We heartily accepted his gift. My boy is 18 and I am very proud of him.

Almost every Christmas, my grandfather would relate his memory of his Christmas in 1928. He’d moved to Texas, to work in the oil patch. Didn’t have any friends or family. Had left home because he was constantly beaten. Rented and lived in a small wooden shack. Only a few coins to his name, on Christmas Eve, he bought himself a pie. A real treat. He ate it alone that night. And wound up getting food poisoning from it.

Seemed to leave a bit of a scar on him. He never really managed to get into the holiday spirit, when Christmas rolled around, like everyone else.
