Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease at £45 per annum to the St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin and began brewing beer. The rest is history.
Some years ago, the shape of the bottle was changed. I swear that what was inside it changed as well, and not for the better.
My favorite beer but sadly I’ve boycotted them since they turned my St. Pat’s parade gay in NYC (by boycotting it). Same for Sam Adams due to Boston’s parade.
Yep. Not the same old brew.
change doesn’t go over well with Guinness experts! A truly conservative brew!
I love Guinness.
I read somewhere (here?) that the PeTAphiles are forcing a change in the Guinness manufacturing process because some step requires it be passed through fish collagen which offends vegans.
Yep!
Is he still paying £45 a year on the lease or was there an escalation clause to adjust for inflation?
No escalation clause. Money was based on gold in those days and they didn’t grasp inflation. Definitely one of the better real estate deals in history.
Not adjusted for inflation, but in the year 10760 they are going to get a HUGE increase!
I haven’t had a Guinness in years. You are right that it changed. I noticed in the 90s that the label had changed from “Brewed and Bottled” at the St. James’s Gate Brewery to simply “Brewed” at the SJGB, which I took to mean that they were now shipping the stuff in bulk (perhaps even concentrated somehow), and having it bottled after shipment. Couldn’t have helped it any.
Perhaps I’ll get to Dublin someday and try it there.
Guiness is good for you. :-)
I hope the tenant (Guinness) picks up maintenance costs!
And thanks to Guinness, we can enjoy it here in the States.
Yep, it's shipped in tankers - think, ocean-going, oil-tanker sized. Mom and Dad took pictures, figured that I wouldn't believe them.
I said, "give me one of those, and a straw. If I'm not back in a week.......give me another week." :-)
Frankly, I like Smithwicks better than Guinness, at least what's served in America. No idea about how they compare on the other side of the Atlantic.
Yep. I had a friend bring some back for me years ago before it was available here. Much better than what we get in the States. Tap is better though. A couple of pubs around where I live have it.
Smithwick is family for me on my mom’s side, which is what got me interested in it, never mind the fact that it’s really good - and that’s what has kept me drinking it.
Well played sir.
