Filipinas are not Latinas.

You are correct, however many do trace a Spanish heritage which would put them in the Hispanic category I believe. I had a very good friend who is Filipino and he was a devout Catholic with the surname Reyes.

Since when? A large percentage of people from the Philippines are mestizos — mixed Spanish and indigenous ancestry — just as are the majority of people in Latin American. So many Filipinos and Filipinas have just as much of a claim on Spanish/Latin heritage as do the Latin Americans.

I worked on the phone every day for years with a Service Center in the Philippines. They did not feel any connection at all to the Spanish culture or Language. They spoke Tagalog and English.

I suspect that because the Spanish were the old Colonial oppressors, the people rejected the language. I guess since the United States held it for just a few decades and then allowed self rule and independence they didn't hate us so much, especially after the Japanese occupation.

In as much as they were a Spanish colony they have just as much right to the term as a South American.
