My kid wants to buy a .22 rifle-any suggestions? Vanity

My 14 yr old has done a good job saving some money and would like to purchase a .22 rifle. Probably lever action. Don't need anything flashy, but something that won't break the bank. Probably around $300 although I am happy to help him with the $$ if more money is needed. He will use it to walk through the woods and hunt squirrel and rabbit. Would love any Freepers advice what to look for or stay away from. He is a good kid and will keep up on the maintenance.

I’ve been happy with used Marlin 60’s.

Ruger 10/22 is the obvious choice. Was my first and I still have one.

Ruger 10/22

More options for customizing over the next 20 years to keep it something he always wants to use.

Henry .22 or a Ruger 10-22. Former is lever-action, latter is semi-auto.

Splurge... get both. :D

Ruger 10-22, said with ZERO hesitation. This is the most universal 22 rifle on the planet, and it can be upgraded with aftermarket stuff to make it super accurate, tactical, silent, you name it.

Ruger 10/22. Been shooting mine for 40 years, all kinds of after market accessory.

You can't go wrong with a Ruger 10/22. Not lever action though.

My grandson really likes his Henry Mares Leg in lever action .22LR. We shoot together all the time.

Ruger 10-22, as it comes.

Tactical. Entire companies have been built just to provide the after-market demand.

For a fun gun, that is minute-of-squirrel accurate and the gun with more aftermarket stuff than any gun, ever, the Ruger 1022. I have a few and love them all. Easy to work on and easy to mod.

For a straight hunting gun, no wish to modify, the Marlin Model 60. Probably more accurate out of the box and a little better trigger. But I doubt the squirrels will know the difference.
