freerepublic | January 15, 2016 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/15/2016 12:55:47 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks for posting. Hoping you will feel better.
If I think I am coming down with a cold I take Zicam and use Cold-eze lozenges, with great success. Safe for kids too. Works like a charm and never fails to stop or shorten the cold.
No gardening going on in Connecticut. Just picking up sticks from trees and surveying the early arrival of crocus as we haven’t had any frost yet this winter.

No we’re in central Texas. We received our first frost day before yesterday. Yesterday was a perfect gardening day. We not only finished pulling plants no longer producing, but cleaned the area around a YUGE pecan tree and will plant herbs there instead of flowers. Why herbs: When the pecan tree leafs out it will shade the base of the tree and flowers love sunshine, so it will be an herb garden. Now I need to think what to put in my double truck tire garden. Someone donated some tires to the community garden and one of our members painted the bright orange, yellow, purple, hot pink and one stripped “purple & gold” school colors. We’ve stacked them and will fill them with flowers. I’m thinking of putting in a couple of rose bushes.

Thats fantastic! You must be south of us. We haven’t had any hard freezes this Winter, but we’ve been below or at freezing a couple of times.

What kind of corn are you planting in March, if you don’t mind my asking? I don’t have the envelope in front of me but ours says June or maybe May at the earliest.

Great idea about the herb garden. I’m jealous of your pecan tree. We’ve got a bunch of oaks. Great for shade, but they’ll be getting real messy pretty soon.

South Alabama here.

I tilled up a patch for planting Irish potatoes and English peas.

Yesterday Wal-Mart put out their Spring bulbs, onion sets, garlic, potato sets, asparagus roots, etc.

I bought some Yukon Gold to supplement the small ones I saved from last year's harvest.

Here are my collards, doing really well!

I've got Alabama Blue, Yellow-green, and Georgia. Alabama Blue and Yellow-green collards are old heirlooms and hard to find. I'm going to let some go to seed. Anyone who wants to get some, contact me, and then I'll give you my address and you can mail me a self-addressed stamped envelope, and I'll send you some.

My kale is doing well, too. I had to fence it in with chicken wire, as the deer really love it!

Nice looking collards, mine are still doing well in North AL. but the next few days of hard freezes will probably bite them way back. I see you have been picking off them for some time as the long stems indicate.

A few years back I went TDY to Puerto Rico to assist some units validate their training prior to deploying to Iraq. On the way to FT. Buchanan I noticed what looked like 7-8ft collards growing wild on the sides of the roads. After talking with some soldiers, they told me that’s what they were, it never gets hot or cold enough to kill them so they grow like weeds.

Good luck with your hard freeze! I was down to 21 degrees at dawn last week so mine or so ago but my collards and kale were able to survive that OK. Maybe it will be so for yours.

Report on Johnny (JRandomFreeper)

I just had a call from Patience, Johnny's niece, and there is now a VA nurse at his house 24 hrs. a day. He has not eaten since last Saturday and cannot swallow, except for liquid. He is now being given liquid meds to control pain. He is totally bedridden now and sleeps most of the time and seldom can speak words.

She says he is calm and peaceful. Johnny is leaving us now. He lived a life of action and fought for his country in the military in two wars.

Let us pray his passing continues to be peaceful.

I’m relieved that Johnny is getting such good care, and that his pain is under control. God bless this brave and good man.

Prayer For Those Close to Death

Lord Jesus Christ,
As You stood by the bed of good Saint Joseph and gently led him home to heaven, so shepherd every soul about to die to a paradise of perfect peace. Let the tears we shed upon their passing stand witness to our love for them and the depth of our thanksgiving for the gift of their lives and the grace of a good death. For You are Lord, forever and ever. Amen.

I will be sad when Johnny passes.

I will probably ping him again one day.

May the Lord hold Johnny in the palm of His hand. Amen.
