Full disclosure: I have a daughter-in-law who has a Black father and three grandchildren who have a Black grandfather.
I notice on the few commercials that show an interracial couple it is, without exception, a Black man and a White woman. It is never the reverse of that. I understand that it is much more common for a Black male to marry a White female than the reverse and I don't care who marries who, (as long a they are of two, separate genders), but why is this?
. You knew Michael Jackson?
I watch HGTV a lot and there are a LOT of married couples with white husband and black wife... and lots of them with black husband and white wife. I think it is no big deal. their kids are beautiful in all cases.
When I was growing up in Okla mixed marriages of asians, whites, American indians, Hispanics, etc were considered uncool. Now those are all mainstream, no big deal, totally socially accepted.
I think in a generation or two there will be no big deal about blacks marrying whites. Just look how silly it was when it was not considered OK just for a caucasian to marry a Cherokee... And my family back then was 1/2 white and 1/2 Cherokee. My great grandmother was half and half, and said to be a beautiful tall statuesque woman with dark olive skin, jet black hair and blue eyes. I will enjoy meeting her in heaven some day.
Ballast. ;-)
right??!
the handful of good ones go run off with white gals.
there was a movie about a white guy dating a black women.
and watched a recent horror flick with a white guy and black woman.
and there was some commercial.
it USED to ALL be black guy, white gal.
that’s changing. +
One of the saddest things I’ve ever seen is the white “granny” (”granny” is an African American term of disrespect for grandmother) pushing the shopping cart with her mixed-race grandchildren around the grocery store. She’s shopping because her daughter has to work. Not the way they wanted to spend their golden years. Often, grandpa has either died or left as well. See it all the time in certain neighborhoods.
The swabbies you hung out with must have been a lot different than the ones I saw in the sixties and seventies. Poor guys looked like they just wanted something to come home to, no matter how fat and/or homely. After months at sea, understandable.
At least those guys back then went for females, now it is any gender so it seems. Obola's brave new military.
There's a big difference between those two things, inasmuch as there is absolutely nothing wrong with interracial heterosexual marriage.
The advertisers, in that case, are probably simply reflecting the modern day reality of the fact that interracial marriages, while certainly not the norm, are certainly becoming more and more commonplace.
Additionally, it seems possible that advertisers are also using such portrayals (interracial relationships) as an opportunity to to target multiple demographics simultaneously.
I actually think that portraying interracial marriages is generally a positive thing, and will hopefully help eliminate "old school" prejudices which, for instance, have no basis in Christian scripture, and which indeed are vestiges of historical bigotry.
I've had to deal with this in my own family, having a father who refused to accept my black girlfriend. My mother, being a stronger Christian, had no issue with it.
My father very recently went to his grave with this prejudice, which was one of his very few flaws. It caused a needless and painful gulf between him and myself (his oldest son) for the last several years of his life. And you can imagine how it made my girlfriend feel.
Bad idea? More challengin, maybe, due to lingering cultural prejudices. People who think interracial marriage is a "bad idea" are becoming rarer and rarer, and that's a good thing.
If a man and a woman truly love each other, then their respective skin colors should be irrelevant, to them and ideally to any enlightened Christian...
“I am one of those people who seem to be rare now, who think inter-racial marriage between Blacks and Whites is a bad idea.”
I would go further and say that inter-racial marriages are a bad idea, not just among blacks and whites.
In fact, if I were someone with the stroke, I would ask that a commission comprised of all races, white, black, brown and yellow and any other group who thinks that they might be a separate ‘race’ be formed to try to look into the future. ~100 years from now everyone is going to be olive-skinned with black, curly hair. In other words, everyone is going to look alike. That is going to suck. However, it seems that the world is filled with fools who are extremely short-sighted.
I celebrate the differences in the races as they are now. They each have their own, unique beauty. That uniqueness should not be destroyed by inter-racial marriages.
Of course, I will not be here to see when everyone looks alike. However, my question to the rest of the world is, “Do all races want to be eliminated?” I do not think so.
It's all about destriying the culture, values and norms of our society so it can be replaced by something else - something that serves the agenda of our elite masters.
Nowadays, yours is a bold statement, and I agree wholeheartedly.
I’ve noticed another thing about current TV ads.
Black people never hang out with other Black people.
Anytime there are three or more people in the ad, one of them is Black.
Group of white guys? One Black friend.
Girl talk ad? One Black female.
Anyway, why don’t Black people in ads ever have Black friends?
No problem with that one though..... Every commercial should have an English Bulldog in it.
She goes out into the yard and hands her husband a hammer while he's on a ladder, working on the roof.
All well and good, but it did seem a tad "unusual".
But it in no way bothered me.
I remember Spike Lee's Jungle Fever movie, where Wesley Snipe's no-goodnik brother (Samuel Jackson) says:
"Whenever you see a brother with a white woman, she's usually fat or ugly. When you see a white dude with a black woman, she always be slammin'". As in "hot".
This has been a routine for black comedians for decades.
Damon Wayans had a joke that went like that.
In real life, I remember buying a TV at a flea market from a couple, where the man was this scrawny, ugly dude, and his wife was black, and fat.
They had several bi-racial kids.
Maybe it happens more often than I thought.
It also seems not uncommon when both people are very religious.
I think the people who have the biggest problem with black men/white women couples is that OTHER black women REALLY hate seeing "their" men rejecting them, and going for a white chick.
Talk about getting the stink-eye.
So you know about the supposed "first" inter-racial kiss on network TV.
Kirk kissed Uhura.
Apparently the advertisers were terrified by what would happen in the South in particular.
One Southern gentleman wrote in and said: "I don't favor the mixing of races, but in the case of Lt. Uhura, I don't blame Kirk for wanting to kiss her. She's gorgeous!"
People might want to check out when the OP joined FR. It was quite recently.
Bittersweet story. Thanks for sharing.
Why publish something that is zero?
But the factoid is nice and I will use it when I can.
