"Let me say something to the school-aged kids here," Cruz stated. "If Heidi Cruz becomes the next first lady, French fries are coming back to the cafeteria." The remark was made by the presidential candidate during his final pass-through Iowa before the all-important electoral event.
Heidi Cruz is, of course, Ted Cruz's wife. And in case you thought first ladies were in charge of school lunches, Cruz's comment is clearly a dig at Michelle Obama, who is known for her interest in and efforts to address the problem of childhood obesity.
The current first lady supports the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, a law that allows the US Department of Agriculture to set standards for food sold in schools. The legislation, enacted in 2010, also gave access to healthy lunches to more than 100,000 children who did not have such meals previously. But Mrs. Obama's mandate to improve school lunches has taken plenty of abuse on social media, well before Cruz's latest jab. Just search for the hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama if you want to see some nasty school lunches, offered up as a rebuke to her attempt to make American kids healthier.
But Cruz is cutting right to the chase. He wants schoolchildren to have the right to eat crap and he wants them to know it. The crowd in Des Moines reportedly cheered when they heard his declaration.

Canada was a colony of France! Lol
Chili and Cheese on my fries!
Makes ‘em a meal!
Oh My gosh! French FryGate!!!!
WE ALL MUST VOTE RUBIO!
Now were talking!
I thought Canadians like vinegar on their fries.
As a high school teacher that has seen Michelle Obama’s plans implemented, I can tell you that fries are the only things high schoolers even eat nowadays.
Cheese curds and gravy.
Poutine.
It’s wonderful.
"I'll get Government OUT of State matters!"
Cruz could win 90% of the student vote (if they could vote) by telling them he will do away with Michelle Obama’s forced feeding plan. Most kids would rather go hungry than eat her crap, and they do.
Really?
All he needs to say is: “the bloated, corrupt, ideological and inefficient Fed.gov has no place in deciding what kids learn, or eat, at their local schools.”
Let parents, in consultation with their local governments decide it all.
I suppose it's a throw-away line, but I found it amusing. The article itself, however, was about as tasty a #ThanksMichelleObama school lunch.
Mr. niteowl77.
Cook ‘em in olive oil and don’t cut them so thin. Fat fries. (As a single dad I had to be creative to make simple, easy to make meals that my kids actually enjoyed.) We can make wholesome food that is actually tastey. Be practical. Not puritanical.
That’s really cute! You prefer a first lady who dictates our childrens’ meals perhaps?
How about a REAL conservative answer; If I am elected, I will end the goddam NEA, central government interference, a return to state and local rights, and do some labor busting on these teachers that will make your heads spin.
Are we so collectively stupid that we can’t even appreciate a metaphor, that Cruz was pointing out that the first lady shouldn’t have a damned thing to say about what we or our children eat?
Next thing we will hear is that Ted is promising illegals amnesty.
Anything to get elected.
brilliant line by Cruz
