Mountain Dew taste has changed? Tastes like bubblegum!
wintertime

Posted on 02/10/2016 5:48:01 AM PST by wintertime

Have other Freepers noticed a change in the taste of diet Mountain Dew? Yesterday, I bought some at my local 7-11 and noticed the change. It was so bad that I poured it out on the grass. I went to another 7-11 and bought a new diet Mountain Dew. This one was OK. This morning I opened a bottle that I bought at our local supermarket and again that same terrible bubblegum taste! Yuck!

So?...Does anyone have news on whether or not the formula has changed? If it has, then I am done with Mountain Dew. It is now too sweet and has lost its tangy zing.

I did a Google search but didn't find much.

Wow, that is a remarkable account.
The list of ingredients on Diet Mountain Dew sound even more ominous that other sodas...hence my decision to quit.
Best wishes and stay healthy on the golf courses, FRiend!

I still don’t drink coffee or caffeine drinks anymore because of what happened. Not good for your ticker.

Its guaranteed cancer in a bottle

What a totally irresponsible statement to make. Please cite your source that everyone who drinks Mt Dew gets cancer.

Also, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE ANYWAY. Live a little. Good grief.

Diet Mountain Dew years ago...it contains chemicals that are just far too toxic to the human body.

What a totally irresponsible statement, #2 in this thread.

Please cite your source for "too toxic for the human body".

So sick of the health nuts who want to tell me what to do. It's just fascism of another kind.

To address your actual question, yes, it can taste different. I've wondered about that myself. The ones my husband buys locally (E TN) taste totally different than the ones sold in western NC. I've been told that the formula isn't what varies, it's the source of the ingredients from region to region. Aside, from the HFCS v. sugar (or the aspartame) issues, the taste does change. Ever notice how a product tastes one way locally, but differently when you travel to a different part of the country? I won't jump on the "shame wagon". I'm sick to death of rank strangers tutoring me on why a substance is bad for me. Good grief, I can read the scientific papers as well as anyone. Do people REALLY think someone will change their behavior by being "shamed" & lectured by every Tom, Dick, & Harry? (I drink a 12 oz soda once or twice a week.) I guess this is where my Libertarian side kicks in. Well meaning food nazis (the left-leaning nannies or the the right-leaning nannies), get on my nerves.

To sum it up, yes, sodas & mass produced food items CAN taste different from time to time, season to season, or region to region.

Thanks. I never knew, until this incident, how much caffeine and sugar were in a Mountain Dew. Another FReeper responded that it is like drinking 16 cups of caffeinated coffee and 250+ grams of sugar.

Young folks may get away with drinking it and Red Bull and other "jolt" drinks for energy but not me. Never again.

Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and Cereal Killers (gave it away and can’t remember the author).

Both are actual books so no links, sorry.

***While I used to similarly enjoy Diet Mountain Dew years ago***

Same here. I weaned myself off soda years ago. I bought one not long ago, couldn’t finish it. It was HORRIBLE!

Regular coke with popcorn is about all I can take anymore.

Nobody in this thread has told you, backwoods-engineer, how to manage your health.
Do as you wish. It is a free country. We are all entitled to an opinion.

***bottling plants you wouldn’t garage your car in ***

I remember the local story about Pepsi from fifty years ago! Story was a colored man working there disappeared and could not be found. Weeks later, when they cleaned one of the Pepsi vats they found his bones in the bottom.

Every time I see Pepsi I think of that tale.

Then there is that golden glow in Corona beer...

Either you got a bad batch or they changed it. You can always contact them with the lot number and ask them about it.
I do a lot of product testing. You would be surprised how often some companies change the formulas of their food and drink products.

I just called and complained a minute ago. “Dana”, the woman who answered the call, said they haven't changed anything.

I told her that I posted it on Free Republic and that it is being discussed there. Maybe that will catch the Pepsi company's attention.

Storage of diet drinks is important...heat especially affects those sweetened with artificials and changes the taste substantially.

I rarely, if ever, will buy diet drinks in the summer as the ingredients, thus the taste, are affected by the heat.

And yes, I know that they’re not the best thing, but moderation is key.

Thanks.

The bubblegum smell and taste is so nauseating I threw the diet Mountain Dew I got from the 7-11 away. I will return the odd tasting bottled Mountain Dew to our supermarket for a refund.

I'll give it a try again in a month or two.

Well...That is useful information.

Maybe it is just a odd batch that is local to our area. I will give it another try in a month or two.
