Social contract (Letter to the editor)
Press Democrat ^ | 13 Feb 2016

Posted on 02/14/2016 8:10:03 AM PST by rey

EDITOR: Despite our differing political philosophies, aren’t there some humane conditions we would all choose to see in a civilized world? Shouldn’t a person who needs work be guaranteed a living-wage job that allows the person to live modestly, independent of government assistance?

Don’t all Americans deserve a roof over their heads, shelter from the elements? Why do we allow this shameful shadow world of homelessness?

Isn’t it a condition of civilization that wholesome food, appropriate clothing, health care, education and retirement security be available to all citizens?

Isn’t there something wrong with a system that denies these basic needs to millions of American workers, yet rewards the excessively rich with power, fame and opulence?

The social contract between individual citizens and society as a whole essentially states that as individuals, we agree to forgo behaviors such as murder, rape, theft, assault and exploitation if, and only if, society is just; if it provides all citizens those conditions necessary to a healthy civil society.

Perhaps much of the unrest, anger and violence we witness today is a consequence of society refusing to honor some of the provisions of the social contract?

GENE A. HOTTEL

Santa Rosa

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: berniesanders; communism; socialism
Some of these letters to the editor demonstrate how people can vote for such idiocy.

No concept of what a right is, no concept of personal property, no concept of right and wrong, no concept of how markets work, no concept of how things are paid for lead us down the road to socialism.

Almost certianly a Bernie Sanders supporter.

“A liberal’s paradise would be a place where everybody has
guaranteed employment, free comprehensive healthcare,
free education, free food, free housing,
free clothing, free utilities, and only law enforcement has guns.”

And believe it or not, such a place does indeed already exist: It’s called Prison.”

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Phoenix

Dear Gene Hottel,

How much are you willlng to sacrifice to provide all this free stuff or is it other people’s money you want to spend here?

I didn’t get the job I wanted so it’s OK for me to murder people?

Here in my little corner of the world, we have a Democrat Mayor. Our City Council is filled with Democrats. The majority of our County Commissioners are Democrat. Our Governor is a Democrat. Our President is a Democrat.

There are more beggars now than at any other time.

The purpose of the Democrat Party is to elect thieves to office so that they can loot the public treasuries.

Dear Mr. Hottel,

The founding principal of the USA is Liberty. Government is at odds with Liberty at all times, and is inimical to Liberty once government becomes too powerful.

If you see someone in need, then YOU dig into YOUR pocket to pay for those needs. I know you will, because you are a good person.

Sincerely,

Ben

It is available to "all citizens". It's called, getting a job.

This paper is up in Sonoma Country which explains the letter. Lots of aging hippies and flower children.

The resolution to these problems is not that they are problems, but in the persons who imagine such things as problems.

As first it could be thought of as a mental disability, or perhaps a deficiency, that they are handicapped in some way, unable to determine cause and effect, lacking in pattern recognition, unable to grasp tangible abstracts like mathematics. Unaware that economics even exists.

Perhaps they could be compared to psychopaths, whose brains are wired so that while they might be able to detect emotions in others, they neither empathize with emotion nor care about it, thus dehumanize others as mere objects, whose feelings and discomfort are of no consequence compared to their own. Someone like Bill Clinton.

In practice, their lives are missed opportunities, and upset that they do not share in the rewards after ignoring the opportunities or refusing to do the work to obtain them. They wanted to attend the Superbowl, but showed up without tickets after the game had been played. So now they demand tickets for free, and that the players must come back and play the game again so that they can see it.

They do not grasp that other people work for what they have and get. It is not given to them by some unfair god, in “life’s lottery”, according to Al Gore. Nor do they like the idea that after working hard for it, it should be taken away and given to those who chose to not work for it and otherwise are undeserving.

Yet these people are unmoved by the harm they cause, that they demand the slavery of others in exchange for free stuff, and they just don’t care that their demands come at the cost of dehumanizing those whose substance they crave.

If someone is indifferent to the harm and damage they inflict on others, we typically put them in prison. Perhaps the same end should be given for socialists and other parasites. They will have their free food, clothing, shelter, health care and direction in life.

My retort:

Dear GENE A. HOTTEL of Santa Rosa,

I have been around for over 60 years.

“Aren’t there some humane conditions we would all choose to see in a civilized world?”

There are humane conditions, and have been humane conditions, in fact, MORE humane than any that i witnessed in my 3 years’ exposure to oriental culture, right here in America. But you have to want it, to have it.

“Shouldn’t a person who needs work be guaranteed a living-wage job that allows the person to live modestly, independent of government assistance?”

No. What you describe has been done, with Britain’s Socialism, the Soviet Union’s and Fidel Castro’s Communism. We, as human beings, have an inate desire to achieve and to succeed, ‘better than the other guy’. It has been the desire, and goal of government, whereever, to stifle that, and compel the individual to submit his freedom, his thoughts and actions, and his devotion, to that government.

“Don’t all Americans deserve a roof over their heads, shelter from the elements?”

Deserve?? Are they all hamstrung and fettered? Can they NOT get up off their duff, and go attain that BY THEMSELVES? They can go get their choice of drink, burger, hot dog, or chicken, without blinking, so can they not focus their attention upon attaining that, if they were to do so?

“Why do we allow this shameful shadow world of homelessness?”

It is my witnessing that homelessness has been with us, all over the globe, since there has been civilizations. it is nothiing new. I have witnessed, in the performance of my duties as a U.S. Census official, some of these folks have CHOSEN to live this life, which is really only a half-step away from ‘living off the grid’, before that coined term became well known. it is THE INDIVIDUAL’S CHOICE live as they see fit for their own lives, and it is NOT for you to stick your nose into their business.

“Isn’t it a condition of civilization that wholesome food, appropriate clothing, health care, education and retirement security be available to all citizens?”

When busybodies attempt to make things better for others, they tack on their own definitions of what is good and right, and compel the individual to submit to those definitions, right or wrong. What folks do for their ‘retirement security’ is none of your business, nor your mismanagement. ‘Appropriate clothing’ stinks of another word, ‘uniforms’. ‘Helathcare’ has now been demonstrated to be the foot in the door for busybodies to regulate and deny what they decide is not good for the masses. ‘Education’ should be the responsibility of the PARENTS, not the busybodies. ‘Wholesome food’ has been grown and prepared by humanity ever since the invention of fire. Again, the PARENTS are responsible for giving their offspring, what has been determined, by their locale and customs, as wholesome food, not some busybody living nowhere near the area of interest.

“Isn’t there something wrong with a system that denies these basic needs to millions of American workers, yet rewards the excessively rich with power, fame and opulence?”

No. Do YOU not ‘reward’ the rich, with every show performers’ ticket, cinema ticket, CD, MP3/4 file, DVD, or computer game that you purchase or rent? It has been over 200 years that the free market has been the engine of democracy. Marx and Engels hated it. Mussolini thought that companies should be co-joined with government. Soviet Russia called it ‘decadent’. The Communist Chinese have found a form of pseudo-capitalist/Communist, since enfolding the free market gem of Hong Kong back into the rest of mainland China.

The social contract as you had stated it, is flawed. Civilization dating pre-mosaic times had laws concerning crime and murder, with swift results. Only those who think that those can be foregone, are the ones who are the destructors of civilization.
