What is the purpose of the conductor with the wand when all the musicians are focusing on their instruments and the sheet music?

I was elated by that performance! Everyone was so young and talented, and enthusiastic. Loved the 1st chair clarinet and oboeist. Exceptionally difficult piece. Would like to see that concert master take on Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D!

I make it a habit to play it throughout the house all weekend long (doing so now as I write!)

I studied classical piano at Barrington College (RI), when I was young. "trisham" from MA may remember the institution (it is no longer there). I was composing "New Age" (hate that term BTW) and "fusion jazz" before they were ever called that!

My iPod has over 18000 songs on it from almost all genres (no rap, screamo, reggae, or dub step) and I shuffle among the songs allowing me to appreciate aspects of styles as contrasted against each other.

It helps me as I have composed music, not to land in a rut!

They are focused upon the music, the instrument, and the conductor. It’s kind of a three-way tie.

The largest band I have ever “fronted” was seven pieces. It’s quite a juggling act to get the horn section and back-up vocalist to come in at the right time. Being the bass player had the advantage of being loud and steady which helped.

In an orchestra of 90+ musicians, each musician only has his part on the music in front of him, and the conductor is the only one with the entire score. The musicians have to count the measures (the number of which is noted on the sheet music) until their next part comes up.

The conductor is not only counting time, he is controlling the dynamics, tempo, signalling the various musicians to come in, etc. But even so, the individual musician HAS to count the measures so they won’t get caught unaware.

I was once at a performance of Symphonie Fantastique, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, where the percussionist somehow LOST the count and came in with the ‘Dies irae” on tubular bells HALF A BEAT LATE.

He caught up, but Leonard probably had him drawn and quartered after the performance.

Just remember...Old Musicians never die.

It's called "meter." The conductor is signaling speed and dynamic, and performers who have rehearsed with the conductor and know their music will be looking for cues from him/her out of the corner of their eye.

It is a very good movie. Jeremy Irons is one of the best actors of the last 50 years and his performance here is among his finest. While DeNiro’s Brooklyn accent is a little incongruous as a Spanish Colonial, his force of personality is enough to sell his character, and you’ll also see a young Liam Neeson.

Classical music is my favorite.
I played the violin for many years.

I got some good sounds out of a Viola once, but for some reason the violin has eluded me. I play piano, guitar, and bass, but my main instrument is my voice.

Classical and Classic rock/Blues are my favorite. :-)
